Tewkesbury Pubs & Inns
« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 10:31 GMT (UK) »

Hello All

I'm after pictures of "The Coach & Horses" Quay St. or Quay Bridge - I understand it closed in 1962. I  believe my husband's ancestor William Browett was the landlord 1830-1856.

Also "The Hop Pole Inn"  Church Street where another ancestor Henry White and Eliza White (nee Browett) were in charge 1851, '61 and 71.  Is this still in business?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Jamys,

You could try contacting the Tewkesbury Historical Society, they were most helpful when I was looking for a pub photo a couple of years ago  Cheesy

The Hop Pole is a 15th century coaching inn, associated with Dickens - lots on Google- and is about to reopen after being taken over by a chain.

Lots of artefacts were sold off when it changed hands recently - very sad.

Thanks for that Arranroots - such a shame that it has to be taken on by a chain.  It will probably turn into yet another modern soulless "destination" - Henry & Eliza would turn their graves!

According to Tewkesbury Pubs (1996, B R Linnell), Wm BROWETT had the Coach and Horses from 1822 till (perhaps) 1842.

However ... Wm BROWETT (born 1811, son of William) appears to have had the place in the 1841 census - you will also find his death date (1843) in the IGI.  Presumably William was succeeded at some point by his brother Fred who had the place in 1851 ... but he wasn't born until 1828.  Fred left at some point between then and 1855.

According to my book, the place was demolished in the 1980s.

I happened to be sitting next to the President of the Historical Society yesterday when I saw your request ... his comment was "You'll be lucky".  Perhaps you will be!

Regarding the death date, there appears to have been another William BROWETT in Tewkesbury (who didn't die in 1843) - he was living in Barton St in 1851 (born 1821, perhaps son of Thomas).   You need to be certain which William you are chasing.

Hello GeoffE

Many thanks for the photo - I wonder if the new owners saw this!!

The William I'm trying to find is the father of Henry Browett (Henry's marriage cert).  The IGI only lists one Henry and his parents were William Browett & Mary Mann.  Henry appears to be the only son who didn't become a publican, he became a printer instead.

The other William Browett, I believe, married Mary Hanford and was described as a Dairy Man in 1851 and a farmer in '61.

William & Mary's daughter Eliza married Henry White and managed the Hop Pole Inn for many years.

Thanks for your time and the info.

Cheers

The William BROWETT/Mary MANN marriage (1811) is to be found here

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wrag44/tewkesbury/tewkesburyvol14pt2.htm

I'm rather puzzled that none of the kids appear to have been christened at Tewkesbury Abbey (IGI batch C054872).  As they were all publicans, it's hard to imagine that they were Methodists!

Hello GeoffE

Thanks for the Tewkesbury link, I've found several members of the family there.

Henry Browett bpt 01.04.1824 Hey Lane, Tewkesbury - is Hey Lane where the church is/was or was that the family residence?

Does Tewkesbury have another church as well as the Abbey?

This family is getting difficult to sort out!!

Thanks for your time

That's the trouble with submitted results in the IGI, you never know what the facts are.  If you search for children of William BROWETT and Mary, you'll see that two come up as Quay Lane and one as Quay Street - I only know of Quay Street - which is where the Coach and Horses once was.

The other Anglican church in Tewkesbury wasn't built till about 1835 (Holy Trinity).  There was a Baptist Church and no doubt one or two Methodist - but would such folk keep pubs?

Until I can search the Tewkesbury PR's myself, everything I've learned from the Familysearch site is taken with a deal of suspicion - well I don't fully trust it outright.  You would have thought a name like Browett would be easy enough, it is in Leicestershire, loads of Browetts.  Then there are the people who transcribed the census returns when the Browetts became Browells.  Is Browell a proper name?  Am I getting two clans mixed up?

Time & research will tell I hope but I do know that Hubby's ancestors were publicans so I have that to cling to!

Thanks for your time
