The past is a foreign country, how can we go there

Oakhill Cottage - Mendham
« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 11:57 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I have just got all excited, I am visiting Suffolk at the end of April to familiarise myself with the specific area where all my relatives have come from.

The 1901 census shows that my ancestros all lived in oakhill cottage, in Mendham, in a 4 roomed house (along with seemingly 2 other familes).

Now as I say, i'm trying to prepare for my visit and seeing if any of these places still exist, when I came across this;
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:LbBFA3DYdjgJ:www.countrylife.co.uk/property/details/property/29924%3Flang%3Den_GB+oakhill+mendham&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=uk&client=firefox-a

Could this be the same place? The houses previously and after on the census are Walsham Hall and Oakhill Farm respectively. Would the cottages be part of this complex? It seems close on the maps?

Anyone with local knowledge of this area - who could help - would be most appreciated. I woudl even pay for your time!

Thanks very much,

Lee

Hmmmmmmm,

Just got the OS map out and I think this is the WRONG one.  Cry

There is an Oakhill farm nearer to Metfield (which is where the link says) and there is another Oak Hill farm near Mendham, which is also next to Walsham Hall - which is more than likely to be the correct one.

Oh well, it'll be an adventure to find anyway.

My original request still is valid though, if there is anyone who lives near Mendham/Linstead etc I woudl be extrmemely grateful to hear for you - I have other references such as "Holly Trees" in Mendham etc

Thanks again,

All the best,

Lee

Have you checked for the locations on

www.old-maps.co.uk

There is a Suffolk Local History Council ~ Local History Recorder at Mendham.

If you would like to contact them I will PM you the details.

Hi Lee

The Oakhill Farm at Mendham is your best bet as it appears on the Mendham census, I would have thought that the other Oak Hill Farm would have appeared on the Metfield census.

If you go to http://maps.google.com/
and enter these co-ordinates (52.396743, 1.355578) in the search map box, it should take you to Oakhill Farm Mendham, you need to look at the satellite view to see the buildings, you can zoom in and look around the area.

These are the co-ordinates for Oak Hill Farm Metfield (52.373543, 1.360400)
