HOW TO REQUEST A LOOKUP

To get the best possible result from our lookup volunteers,  please take a moment to read these instructions  ...  


There are many new requests each day and posting a clear outline of your requirements will make it easier for them to help you.  It will also avoid providing information you already have and save the time of those who are trying to help you.



1. Start a "New Topic" with subject line very clearly stating the RESOURCE  and the SURNAME of the person(s) you are seeking something like the following example:

SMITHERS 1871 census - Bethnal Green



2. Then in the body of the message enter the details of your request. 

Good Example 1

Looking for 1871 census information on the following:
John Smithers born c1822 Brighton Sussex
Wife Arabella born c1825 Islington London
Children Thomas born 1845 Islington, Ann born 1847 Shoreditch.

Good Example 2

I’d like to find this family in 1861.  Here is there entry for 1871 …
John Smithers  Shoemaker aged 51 born Sussex
Jane wife aged 44 born Surrey Bermondsey
Alfred aged 15 born Surrey Lambeth


Bad Example

I’m looking for John and Jane Smithers  in London possibly Bethnal Green.



Although we sometimes do not have much information on an individual or family, to obtain the best results and to make it easier finding the information you require, include what you already know about the individual(s), e.g. insert census details already known, provide birth dates/places etc., and specifically indicate what information you are now looking for.  Also, if you have requested a lookup before or another lookup which has provided partial information on the family or individual please state that or provide a link to the previous topic.


A person willing to carry out a lookup for you will then simply reply to your message.


RootsChat does not tolerate breaches of copyright or licence agreements. Please do not request any lookups from specific commercial sources and other sources where fulfilling the request would require such a breach.

Very important bit !

We have some excellent RootsChat members with some very special talents who try there best to help everyone who posts a message on the site. I know of quite a few (you know who you are) who have gone out of their way and spent there own “brass” (money) in some cases just to bring a smile to RootsChatters face here and there.

(but you can still send a PM as well, if you wish; I'm sure it will be appreciated.)

COMPLETED REQUESTS

If your request has been completed then please use the modify button to add the  word
   *COMPLETED*   to the titles of your final posting and your initial posting on your topic.

The moderators will then move the request to a Completed Requests board.
This helps to avoid wasting the time of the members who do the look-ups,
and makes the unanswered and on-going requests easier to find.
