Whilst researching my AMERIDITH ancestors in Devon I came across one (Judith) who appears to have been born "in of Ashley Castle, Cheshire" according to the Visitations of the County of Devon.
I don't know of any Ashley Castle in Cheshire and wonder if any other Rootschatters can point me in the right direction please?

Hi Kelly
When I was a child I used to go to Castle Mill, Ashley where there was an open air swimming pool. I've found a website that is quite interesting, Trafford Community Archive:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/033e/
I hope that works, as the original link was too long, so I've "shrunk" it.
Apparently there was a house there which was demolished in 1954 and a modern house has now been built. Unfortunately, the archives don't go back further than the 1700s, but it is possible that there was a "castle" or a house known as a "castle" on the site in earlier times.

Hello Kelly As the others have already indicated there is a location called Castle Mill in Ashley in Cheshire. Very close to Casrle Mill - there was a Mill there - there is a Castle Hill Farm.
A dew years ago now I belonged to an archaeology group. It was suggested that we ought to have a look at a particular location near to the Farm on the height above it. Your relative would appear to be related to the 'castle' - what ever the structure then - in the sixteenth century. when something may well have been standing.
I was led to believe that the University of Manchester archaeologists (GMAU) may have had an interest.
If you try this map site http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/ Use Place Search to go to Ashley, (parsih of Bowdon). This will hive you all the Plots in Ashley. If you go to Plots 216 or 217 you should find thereabouts Castle Hill Farm. If you use Twin Maps and look also at say the 1910 map you should be able to relate it to where it is in Cheshire,
My apologies if you have already done that
Best wishes Reiver

Welcome to ROOTSCHAT, Hermanside. Hope we can help you in the same way that you are helping Kelly An excellent idea to contact HCS.
I was involved earlier in the thread and so was reminded as a consequence of your posting. Your mention of Ashley Hall and also Christopher's mention earlier and the name MEREDITH mentioned by Kelly in her first post rang bells
Kelly There was a family called MEREDITH who owned Ashley Hall in the early 17th century. My source is a book entitled Timperleie; The History and Archaeology of Timperley Old Hall edited by Pat Faulkner and published by the South Trafford Archaeological Group. The ownership of Timperley Hall and Ashley Hall were linked. The Archaeological Groups website is at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bryan.burtonbj/ They have copies for sale and/or a question may elicit more information from the Editor who is a member.
You first mentioned the name AMERIDITH. The name I see mentioned in the book is Sir Amos Meredith.
Regards Reiver
