Help please - I am trying to find the parents of Henry Divall - born abt 1780 in Sussex. He died in 1857 in Horsham. He married a Martha Comber.
I would also be interested to find any brothers or sisters!

Hi Tilly,
He appears to have been baptised Harry Divall 23 Jan 1780 in Horsham, parents George & Alice.
George Dival of Steyning married Alice Bowell of West Grinstead 15 Jan 1771 in West Grinstead by licence.
Siblings of Harry/Henry may be:
George 20 Nov 1782
George & Alice were removed from West Grinstead 27 Ap 1772 - they are recorded with an infant son Charles. They appear to have been removed to Horsham.

Hello Nell
Thank you VERY much - another generation back!
I've had a quick look on IGI and found two George Divals born in Sussex in the 1750s - one in Clayton and one in Uckfield. Do you know if either of these places is near to Steyning?
Also, when you say George and Alice were "removed" - what does this mean?

Settlement Certificates & Removal Orders
There was a legal right of poor relief which was linked to one's settled place of abode. In the 1601 Poor Law Act you became entitled to relief if you had been resident in a parish for a month. This had the effect of paupers being kept moving on - so that they did not acquire a right to poor relief funded by the parish rate payers. The Settlement Act of 1662 ruled that anyone entering a township and occupying a tenement worth less than £10 per annum might, within 40 days, be removed back to his parish of settlement. A child's place of settlement was that of his father until he was articled (which could happen when he was only 7), in which case his place of apprenticeship became his parish of settlement. Other persons became settled after a year living in the parish - and the annual hiring fairs (always on the same date) ensured that people were taken on for 364 days at a time!
It was not unknown for a poor woman in an advanced stage of pregnancy to be unceremoniously carted over the parish boundary by the Overseers of the Poor so that the child would be another parish's financial burden.
In 1697 settlement certificates were introduced, which were given to a pauper. This was written by the churchwardens of the settlement parish and given to the pauper. This allowed the pauper to move to another parish for temporary work, for instance harvest, hop picking, etc, and provided the temporary parish with documentation to allow the pauper's return should he become a liability on the parish funds.

Act of 1697 – Settlement Act which Virtually Immobilised the Poor
A Poor person may enter a Parish (provided they possess a settlement certificate saying their parish would be responsible for them) commonly called a Paupers Passport - if the Pauper, his wife and children “shall wear upon the shoulder a large Roman ‘P’ together with the first letter of the name of their Parish” (repealed 1782) (The badge for Paupers from Arundel is shown below)
Paupers were brought before the magistrate and examined about their origins, parentage and previous occupations.
If you can find these records in the Archives at your local Records Office - they are a very rich source of genealogical information

Thank you again for the information. I shall contact the Archives in Sussex to see if they have anything.
Certainly puts things into perspective when we think how hard some of our ancestors' lives must have been.
