Cootes of Dullingham
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 12:04 GMT (UK) »

Hi,
Is anyone researching the surname Cootes or Coates in Dullingham and Stetchworth?
Would love to hear from anyone with an interest in the family especially George and Sarah Coates,
Thomas and Ann Cootes and Charles and Ellen Cootes.

Tempsford,
Hi again, and today when I had a brief 30-minute visit to the CCRO I made a note of how many COOTES/COOTS/COOT entries there were for Dullingham, without the details.  Would you like to know what these are, or do you already have them...?

Hi Keith,
Yes, I have the parish registers for Dullingham.
Thanks anyway.
I'm still looking for any descendants of the Cootes but not having much luck!

Tempsford,
I'm having a very early night tonight, so I think I'll give you the bare details of what I discovered on your family in Dullingham, and if any of it looks interesting, I'll find out more precisely next time I visit.
The earliest baptism there was for 1818 (two of them), then between 1881 and 1943 there were a further seven.
The COOTES marriages were in 1754, 1899, 1909 and 1929.
There was a burial in 1625, then between 1887 and 1936 there were eight burials.
Finally, the large total of eleven Banns between 1883 and 1965, which suggests that perhaps as many as 8 subsequent marriages might have taken place in a nearby parish, with the Banns read in the bride's/bridegroom's parish at the same time...

p.s. Crossed posts, but never mind!  What's the actual story on all those Banns being read in the village...?

Hi Keith,
The problem with the Cootes is they appear for most of the time in Dullingham register as Coates and I believe that a branch of the family is still Coates today but my twig became Cootes! Although the first entry isn't sure if the surname should be Cootes or Coates!
This is causing me huge difficulty finding my 4x gt grandparents marriage. According to the census George was born in Barton Mills and Sarah in Mildenhall. But I can't find their marriage either under Coates or Cootes! They moved to Dullingham between 1813-18.
Thats why I'm hoping to find someone else researching this line!
Having reread your message is it Cootes in the original registers? I have been using a transcription and wonder if it is wrong. Thanks.

Tempsford,
I only looked in the alphabetical index, and the name variations there gave just COOTES/COOTS/COOT.  But perhaps if I'd looked at every single entry (it was a transcription, yes) there might have been an "A" in the spelling somewhere...

Hi Keith,
Thanks anyway. I'll plough on with Cootes and hope to make a breakthrough soon! Grin
