I cannot for the life of me find a marriage of my ancestors.
John Porthouse, born c1823 in Stanwix, Cumberland, married I guess c1849, to Dorothy Wilkin, born c1825 in Dalston, Cumberland. First child born 1851 in Newton, Cumberland.
They are in the 1851 census living in Penrith.
But an exhaustive search in the freeBMD has found no trace of their marriage.
Any suggestions?
Chris.

Freebmd is only a partial index and is still being added to by volunteers
You will need to search the full GRO index which is available at your nearest main library. It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

Find me in the Yellow Pages.

Index pages are also free-to-view online for that time period at freebmd.rootsweb.com

Thank you all for your advice.
As far as I can tell freebmd is pretty much at 100% for the years I am searching.
I have even done a full search through the images from about 1847-1851 and cannot find them. I am starting to believe they didn't get married, or didn't register.
What is also odd is that I can't find John in the 1841 census where he should be. Would there be other records I can search in online to find this marriage?
Chris.

Hi
That was my immediate reaction, Bob.
Or could they have had Irish blood and gone back to Ireland to marry? Or only a few miles into Northumberland. In this area, between the hills and tbe sea, anything can happen!
Actually if it was a Gretna Church that's not so bad. There's the Scottish IGI, and a good site as well, mentioned on their board. And there's Scotland's people.
If it's an irregular marriage in Gretna Green, there are quite a few sources, even among those known about. Thjere's a published list for one lot - Gretna Hall? in a few libraries. T
he others are in a feww places, but there are a few registers in the Ewaret Library in Dumfries. You could contact them, I think you pay for a certificate. But if you haven't found them in the next few weeks I'm hoping for an outing there.
Keep this updated, or send me a pm and I'll look if noone has first.
Good luck!

PS
I always thought it would be very rare to find these marriges in a family, but each of my local adopted families, (families of close friends that I keep going like my own). has at least one that we've found by chance without even going looking.
They may be without parents consent, or such that would be illlegal in England/in a hurry, but one gentleman wrote, we were walking on a day out and decided it was so pretty we would just get married!
There are tens of thousands of these marriages. I will look for the links.
Good hunting!

This is the site for Achievements, a research society. They used to state one of the centres - there are a good few. Now they just call it Gretna Database, so it's just an offchance, but whether more than one centre or "Priest" is involved I'm not sure.
But there's a free search and matching name, then you pay for details. There are quite a few Wilkins and Porthouses though I can't see yours, unless there's a second marriage, and the first one's in.
There were regular coaches from certain establishments in Carlisle and Brampton for weddings so we're talking big numbers.
Best wishes
