Hi
What about Thomas Porthouse born (or registered anyway), Jun 1850 Penrith 25 157?
A bit early, but if they had a babe covered in layers in some sort of cot they could have said anything at the census - especially if they weren't married and had hope to do something about that.
Only thing is, the reg dist is hoards of villages/churches, and Ag labourers moved so much!
I wonder if they got any aid, there are all sorts of records for that under the church, and the Fell Lane I know is on the same side as Townhead, and they were always paying out there!
Good luck! Emms

Hi Andrea,
I got Dorothy's maiden name from the birth records of the children that John & Dorothy had after they moved to Hobart, Australia.
The family left England in 1857 and emigrated to Hobart aboard the 'Prompt'. Their surname was listed as ‘Portus’ on the shipping record. On board were John (aged 33), Dorothy (aged 31), Thomas (aged 7), John (aged 5), Sarah A. (aged 2) and William (infant). William was possibly born on the ship.
John & Dorothy had another 5 children in Tasmania. In all the mother's maiden name is recorded as Wilkin or Wilkins.
My ancestor is the John who was aged 5 in 1857. I thought he might have been the John registered in the 2nd Qtr of 1852 in Penrith.
I will email the local register office and see if they can help.
Chris.
