Now about that marriage??!!??

There seems to be no sign of it in the official lists - perhaps the district registrar omitted passing it on to HQ and it's lurking in some dark corner near Penrith.

Dear All,

I'm afraid I'm a little out of my depth now.
I live in Adelaide, Australia and have never visited the UK so I might need a bit more advice.

I looked at the Gretna marriages site, and understand that they could have eloped. I didn't realize this sort of thing happened. But I guess it makes sense.

I have searched on freebmd from 1843-1855 (when they left England for Australia). I have searched every combination of spellings etc I can think of (even looked in births & deaths in case it was put in the wrong index).

I looked in the original indexes from 1847-1851, looking for both Porthouse and Wilkins, but found nothing.

Can someone give me advice on how to write to the Local Register Office? As you say they may have record where the GRO doesn't. Would I have to pay to get them to look for me?

I also did a search on Scotlandspeople from 1843-1854.

Chris.

Register Offices http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/registration/wheretofindus/default.asp

In passing, have nothing to to with a website which has bmd-certificates in its URL (unless you like paying £25-£65 for a certificate).

In 1841 Dorothy is with her parents William and Mary at Stone Raise, Blackwell High.     Not sure exactly where that is but in the St Cuthbert part of Carlisle
HO 107 Piece 165 Bk1 Didtrict 11 Folio 7 page 10
William Wilkin 40 ag lab
Mary 30
Dorothy 15
Mary 4 all born in county
Remember ages above 15 were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 in 1841.
That being the case it is possible they married in the Carlisle area so an email to Carlisle record office might bear fruit.   If you have an LDS Family History Centre near Adelaide then you should be able to order parish register films of any UK parishes and search them there to see if you can find it yourself.   The register office don't generally charge to look for records, though marriages are more complex as they like to know the church.
The only 1841 record I could find for John was one who was only 10 so I am not sure if it is him.   Living at Scaleby, north of Carlisle.   HO107 Piece 170 Bk1 District 11 F7 p7   You probably have these already but it helps get my thoughts into focus!
What did they call their children?     You are assuming Thomas was their first born but of course there may have been earlier ones who did not survive.    Do you have his birth certificate?

Just another thought.  Looking on the IGI for the names shows an amazing variety of spellings that I would never have thought of.  Dorothy's baptism is there but I could not see one for John although Stanwix seemed to be covered.

Hi Chris

I'm sorry we haven't been able to help you before now.

I did have aniother look on Free BMD with various combinations of spellings with no success.  Both times I tried, I couldn't get on to the original indexes, or all censusess.

I'm getting the message that it's easier for us to get help from Australia through the official channels than the other way round, and certainly people in Australia have been very generous with me.  I've quite a few branches with links there.  Some people over there evn looked up things from this country that I couldn't get here, or not without taking a gap year to travel and taking out a small mortgage anyway!

A couple more thoughts.  Writing (or emailing the offices is a definite good move.  There are always bits that don't seem to be indexed - including my own Grandmother's birth.

It's a shame though you can't  be sure of the loxationas they've travelled even in our small area.  Penrith seems the obvious, but if she went back to her roots to marry, the country near Dalston could be Carlisle or Wigton Registra's.

The other thing is to go for the national office in Southport.  I know nothing's perfect, and it is a huge establishment now, but whenever the indexes have slipped up for me, they've always come good.

We still have family close by, who've been in when they have open days.  They do still have an old fashioned research room for awkward queries.  I think you need to mail and explain, though, as well as filling the form in.  We're lucky we can ring and get a real person and if they aren't sure they can get someone who is.  If you speak and they realise you've done your homework, and really think there's an entry in the small interval you've given, they usually get someone who's used to the right kind of reseach on the job.  They've also given me a definite direct phone number in the past.

We had trouble recently with an army birth certificate.  I'm guessing that if the person doing the job at the other end isn't used to more unusual queries, and it doesn't fit the computer, it just gets chucked out and you have to pay again.  I know you can't ring cheeply, but if you have a prioblem when you've written and explained - if you choose this route, pm me and I'll have a go.

Speaking of which, we've not checked the army/foreign marriages - doesn't seem too likel, but---

Another thought - Newton might be Newton Reigny near Penrith.  I'm not going for a bit, but if anyone had chance to look at the castle---or is there a copy in Penrith Library---?

Good luck.

I must go and reply to the kind folk who've replied to me from over there!

Best wishes

I just had another thought!   Did you get Dorothy's maiden name from the birth certificate for Thomas?    It is always possible that she was a widow when they married.  I know she was still quite young but it did happen.  In that case it might be worth looking to see if any John Porthouse married a Dorothy - regardless of her surname.
Emms - Thomas is shown as 1 month in 1851 so I think he is the one registered in Carlisle on FreeBMD.  I wonder if www.genuki.org.uk might have the answer to where Newton is.

I tried looking for a Dorothy WILKIN marriage last night to no avail Sad

Re the birth registration on FreeBMD - it's rather a long time after the birth (Q4 after Q1).

Hi all

There are quite a few Newtons in our area, but the reason I mentioned Newton Reigny is that it is so close to Penrith and has its own register.

Thinking about the bith you've given, though, maybe we should be looking nearer to Carlisle for a marriage, or even over the border.  I did look on the IGI for Scotland last night though.  If he was born at home, they could only have moved to Penrith weeks before.

That site doesn't have all the remaining registers for irregular marriages at Gretna.

Blackwell is on the southern edge of Carlisle.  Most entries I've found this early have been in St Cuthbert's or even out at Skelton, not far from Newton Reigny.

Best wishes
