James PARSONS Porthtowan 1851
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 16:18 GMT (UK) »

I believe this is my ancestor, shown on the 1851 census living at Porthtowan, Illogan son of a miner William Parsons born at St Agnes, mother Ann born at Illogan.  Any info would be greatly appreciated

Hi mbee and welcome to Rootschat.

Not sure what you are looking for exactly but this looks like his birth reg

Births Sep 1840
Parsons  James Chagwin     Redruth  9 231

His birth cerificate will show his mother's maiden name.

Will see what else I can find.

not much to add to what you see from the census - altho this might be their marriage ... reinforced by his christian name  Smiley

This looks like the marriage of James' parents

Marriages Dec 1839
CHEGWIN  Ann    Redruth  9 293
HICKS  James     Redruth  9 293
LANGFORD  Walter     Redruth  9 293

ROGERS  John     Redruth  9 293
TEMBY  Mary     Redruth  9 293
THOMAS  Rebecca     Redruth  9 293

So you could probably dispense with the birth certificate.  The marriage certificate will give you the names and occupations of William and Ann's fathers.

Do you have the 1841 census info?

Thanks very much for reply, I will now be able to get that certificate.  I have looked on the 1841 census.  There is a name discrepancy which could be a spelling error.  It states James Ohegarn aged 10m which is the correct age.  There is also another child Thomas aged 14 so I guess this is a second marriage - I will have to delve further,

Hi mbee,

Welcome  Grin

The image looks like James Chegwin Parsons to me and has been transcribed as such at the COCP

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kayhin/40142d.html

I think you will find William and Thomas may be brothers.

William generally lists his Place of Birth as St Merryn

From the IGI I see four children listed to mother Jane. - 2 on the same day including

William PARSONS 11 Sep 1813

Batch C002022 for St Merryn. Possible siblings - Jane 1813, Ann Louisa 1825, Thomas 1830 - Perhaps all were not babies at the time of baptism. Would be interesting to check the originals.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

A Jane appears in 1841 census for St Merryn, with three possible daughters so perhaps there are others not listed on IGI. One Louisa - may be Ann Louisa.

If this is the correct William you will probably find no father will be listed on the marriage certificate. The certificate should also clarify if he had been previously married. Good luck  Cheesy

We will look forward to hearing what the certificate says.

When I look again at my census info I think I have have something wrong.  I dont have a full entry for 1881 only gt. grandad Joseph Parsons born 1864 Cornwall,  Father James, mother Sarah,  1871 are the same people I think but shows Stoke Cleveland Cornwall as place of birth for Joseph and James (father).  oN 1861 census place of birth for James is Illogan.  As I cant find the full 1881 census I cant compare the other people in the houshold.  Does it look like I have gone adrift here

YOu can see the 1881 census and households at Family.search

Do you mean the family that were in Radcliffe, Lancashire, England
James, Sarah, Joseph, Albert and William. The first 4 born Cornwall

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
The entries at Family search do not always show exactly what is on census pages for birthplace in particular.

Thanks Althea, it is the Radcliffe family on the 1881 and in 1871 i have them living in Leigh which I think is correct, but when I picked up the 1861 census, I think I went wrong as this shows James being born in Illogan, Cornwall whereas it should be Stoke Cleveland Cornwall, so I will hav to search the 1861 census again.  Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

We are very fortunate in Cornwall where the entire 1841-1891 census are available free of charge.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,144624.0.html

I do see a James in Stoke Climsland but he is a little older. On viewing the 1881 image I see the place of birth has been listed as simply Cornwall as it has for Sarah, Joseph and Albert. 1871 as you mention Stoke Climsland is given as it is for the two eldest children. Were the children born There? We often see wrong places of birth entered in the census so no guarantees this is correct - These entries are dependent on who provided the information and when out of county often how the enumerator heard it. With these names there is no chance it was misheard. Also Illogan and Stoke Climsland are not in the same area of Cornwall.

There are a few James Parsons born in Cornwall around the right time. I think your best bet to be sure you have the correct James and allow you to continue would be to order the marriage certificate for James and Sarah which will give us his fathers name.

Hi again Marilyn,

I am looking at this wondering given James pob as Stoke Climsland after marriage why you think James the son of William and Ann from Illogan is your James? Do you have any reason to believe this? Illogan and Stoke Climsland are not in the same neighbourhood.

There is a James in Stoke Climsland, as I mentioned. He is a few years older than the Illogan man. By 1861 he is listed as aged 24. Wife Susan 27. The only marriage I can find is in Launceston (correct district for Stoke Climsland.)

James PARSONS = Sarah HOSKEN Mar 1/4 1861 Launceston 5c 49

I see no marriage to a Susan

Now we do have your

Joseph Charles PARSONS Jun 1/4 1863 Launceston 5c 36

Albert PARSONS Jun 1/4 1865 Launceston 5c 34

So it does appear these boys were born in Stoke Climsland confirmed in your Lancs census.

If this is in fact the marriage you are after then James and Sarah were married by 1861 census, therefore he would not be in Illogan with his parents. Now in Stoke we have this James aged 24 b Stoke Climsland a Copper Miner with wife Susan 27 living next door to a lot of Hoskens. One would have to wonder, could this be Sarah, enumerated as Susan. Undecided I don't see them again.

Think you need to start with one of the children's birth certificates which will give the mothers maiden name . If Joseph' mother is Sarah Hosken we will need that 1861 marriage certificate to be sure who James is. It will list both of their fathers names. If this is your man (the son of James and Mary from Stoke Climsland) he drops a few years when he gets to Lancs so certificates are really the only way to go.

Good Luck.............Kris  Cheesy

Hi Kris, I now have the marriage certificate of James Parsons and Sarah Hosken 14 Feb 1861.  no ages are given - full for him and age for her. residing at Stoke Climsland, both fathers are called James, witnesses William Parsons and Elizabeth Hoskins.  Does this tie in with the census you mentioned for 1861, regards Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

Well that is good news. You can follow the families in the census from the link I provided. Sarah's family are living next door to James and "Susan." I note she is Salley/Sally in the previous census entries. The family do change their place of birth a bit. The family are in Phillack in 1841 (Hosking) so this seems to fit with the place of birth provoded in 1861, although Sarah HOSKING was baptised 23 Dec 1832 St Erth. 1851 they are in Stoke Climsland (Hoskin) all listing a birth in Stoke Climsland. 1861 they list births mainly in St Erth which fits with the baptism entries (later ones Stoke Climsland)

Here is the marriage entry

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/moreinfo.php?ID=313491&dbtype=marriages

James PARSONS = Mary Ann HAWTON 13 Sep 1824 Stoke Climsland
