Belsey/ Marsh
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 16:33 GMT (UK) »

To Bill 749 You very kindly did a look up for me for Mercy Belsey about a year ago. I've been in contact with someone
who has details of her family.

I also remembering writing that I have two Marsh lines in my family. Have managed to trace one back to Abraham Marsh, b1645, of Barham.

The other remains a mystery......at the moment!

Thanks for all the help you have given me.

Hi.
The MARSH family of Lamberhurst and later Marden Kent is my main line of research.
Any connection to your mystery Marsh family?

Hello Jean, I think the "mystery" Marshes are most likely to have come from the Deal area.

I have  Henry Marsh born 1800 but unable to go back further. Something will turn up I expect!

High Finnisfinder

The MARSH line going back to Barham is apparently my family line - I'm gradually becoming convinced!  Where do you fit in to that line?

Jean - you probably already know that MARSH was the most common name in East Kent in the 1800s, with many families originating in different parts of the county.

When researching my maternal line I found baptisms for Henry MARSH all over the place, almost any of which could have fitted the time-frame I was looking at!  Almost every parish church in the area has its share of MARSHs in the churchyard!

Hello Bill,

My Marsh line, as follows, checked as much as I was able from various sources. The Barham website is useful with your transcriptions of the Parish records.

William George Marsh 1880-1967. Born Gt Mongeham, my grandfather. Married Julia Finnis 1881- 1960

Charles Henry 1856-1936. Born Woodnesborough. Married Emma Gambrill 1858-1930.

William 1823-1878. Born Eastry. Married Rachael Cox 1818-1896.

George William 1779-1850. Born Barham. Married Maria Morris 1799-?

James 1746-1830. Born Barham. Married Sarah Prebble 1745-1795.

John 1711-1799. Born Barham. Married Mary Newsham 1716-?

John 1682-? Born Barham. Married Ann Sutton 1683-1759

Abraham 1645-1741. Married Jane?

Please let me know if I'm way off beam.

Regards Finnisfinder.

Hi Bill and Finnisfinder.
Yes I know Marsh as a surname was more common than Smith in some areas of Kent.
If I have all my info correct I have got back to a Bridger Marsh who married a Hannah Giles 1760 Lamberhurst Kent.I have been unable to find his baptism but I am sure there must be a connection to  Marsh family of Edburton Sussex,a John Marsh married an Ann Bridger and had a son Bridger born 1706.Too early to be my Bridger. My Bridger was able to sign his name on his marriage parish record very uncommon for 1760!John Marsh was the parish clerk of Edburton and there seems to be many missind baptisms for this family.I think my Bridger may be the son of a Thomas Marsh another son of Ann and John.
My line is from Bridger and Hannah's second son Thomas born 1763 Lamberhurst.
Thomas moved to Marden Kent when he married in 1785.

               Regards Jean.

Not guilty!  We have Bill Marsh in Canada and other members of the Marsh clan here in Kent and Australia to thank for all the MARSH transcriptions - I gave up on them years ago!

I met up with Bill a few years ago when he was in Dover for a family "reunion" with my great aunt and some other local MARSH cousins.  I have a copy of the family tree that he put together, which shows my descent from Abraham (of Barham).  I was very suspicious at first, but having looked at his evidence I think it is probably correct.

Unfortunately Bill has had a great deal of poor health in recent years and no longer gets involved with the website or answering queries relating to the MARSH family.
