Great Aunt Minnie - My Inspiration
|
Hello I am working on my husband's German Ancestry and I am struggling to read the handwriting on a couple of official documents we have obtained. Its not Gothic script but bad handwriting. By coincidence we have recently moved to Germany and we are both in the process of trying to learn the German language. Whilst I can manage enough day to day and can read bad English writing my recognition of the German language in poor script is hopeless.
I tried the local family history group but they could not offer any help to read the documents concerned. Please does anyone have any idea of who to approach for help
Fingers crossed
Sue
Any advice welcome

Hi Sue,
Willkommen in Deutschland (wo denn ??)
Can you scan the document, or parts of it and post it here ? There are several people who will have a go at reading for you, and between us, we can can probably piece it together.
Gruß, Bob

Helo Bob Thank you so much. I will send it tomorrow if I may- would you prefer it sent on the forum or PM? I don't want to offend.
Live in Altes Land not so far from Hamburg. Been here two years- but still struggling with the lingo.
Husband's mum's family was from Hannover but moved in 1938 to Wannsee Berlin. Usual story after the war - marriage to British soldier and settled in Uk.
We love living here - but family tree chasing is a lot different to the uk style.
Vielen Dank
Viel spaß
Sue

Hello
Here is the first document which comes from the Magistrate of Braunschweig entitled Acta and states the name of the Worker - August Louis Robert Eiling.
The writing is very small and I have tried to do the best copy I can. Sorry now I look at it again it is hard to read. Anyone who has a go has been thanks
Grüß
Sue

Hi Here is the second document again for August Louis Robert Eiling - says Ausweis which I thought is a passport but it must have another context here.
Thanks

Hi Sue,
maybe not a passport as we know them, but more like an Identity-Card.
Basically, it's an Citizenship-Passport or ID card, saying that he is indeed a Prussian.
wird bescheinigt, dass derselbe und zwar durch Abstammung we certify, that the above, through descendency (i.e. birth)
die Eigenschaft als Preusse besitzt (literally) the attribute Prussian posesses i.e is a true-blue Prussian.
More details will follow later (when I have time) and others have a go
Gruß, Bob

The images are very clear and the handwriting beautifully clear. I will ask my sister-in-law if she will translate it as she has no problems with such writing.

Moin Moin
Many thanks to you both for help so far. Its interesting about the true blue Prussian blood as I have assumed the family was from Braunschweig from way back. I know never assume. ....
Please take your time as I know this is a bit of a task to ask. I have had the documents for a little while as I have not managed to find anyone able to read them,....and thats living in Germany.
Vielen dank-
Sue

Hello Evi Delighted to hear from you - welcome to the Forum- its full of very experienced and kind people. Thank you for your offer. A kind lady called Rapunzel has been working on this for me so at the moment I will defer your offer but its really kind and I am very grateful.
Let me know if you want any look ups on English Wales or Scottish census records or English civil indexes -I am only too happy to help. On the German family tree front - we have manged ok considering the system is more complex. However you are a great addition to the forum as there are a good number of folk on here having German connections.
Vielen Dank Viel Spaß Sue

Hello Thank you to everyone who has replied to my request to read some old German Documents.
In the end Roots Member "Rapunzel" battled with all the old German Script and Stylised text to produce not only wonderful and detailed transcriptions but translations into English.
This was a tough assignment which had seen my local family history centre in Germany shake their heads when presented with the documents and I had tried Roots as a last resort.
Thank you Rapunzel for your brilliant work and thank you to Rootschat for facilitating the process of finding help.
Best wishes
Sue
