What happened to John Duncan Stewart?
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 17:58 GMT (UK) »

Looking for trace of John Duncan Stewart (possibly also under Stuart spelling). Born Cullen c. 1841. Parents, Alexander and Elspet(h) Stewart, maiden name Grant. John living with family at Cullen House in 1851 where father was employed as Gate House Keeper. After 1851 census cannot find him at all. If middle name was dropped in subsequent documentation - which is what I think may have happened - will be very hard to track down. Would like to find out what became of him.

Hello Doddie

Someone seems to have passed on the wrong info to you.? Are you sure you're not looking for James Duncan Stewart b.12 Jul 1841 ch 08 Aug 1841, Cullen Banff.

Parents of the above are down on the IGI as married on 25 Nov 1830  (Al. Stewart /Elspet Grant) in Cullen.
IGI searched from 1829 to 1833 for marriage. (see all children below) 53 Elspet Grants - and all variants of Elspet married in period only two in Cullen in same year(1830).

Hello Doddie - from the IGI - www.familysearch.org

Born to Alexander Stewart and Elspet Grant - all extracted - and all Cullen, Banff.

1.  Elcie Stewart b.  27 Jun1833  ch.  03 Jul 1833
2.  Alexander Stewart b.  07 Apr 1835  ch.  03 May 1835
3.  John Stewart b.  14 Dec 1836  ch.  18 Dec 1836
4.  George Stewart b.  23 Nov 1838  ch.  09 Dec 1838
5.  James Duncan Stewart b.  12 Jul 1841 ch.  08 Aug 1841
6.  Daniel Stewart b.  06 Sep  ch.  11 Sep 1843
7.  William Stewart  b.  16. Nov 1845  ch.  29 Nov 1845.

This means all certs can be obtained from the ppv site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  :O)

Hope it's been of some help.

Before I did an IGI check - looked in Banff on SP for deaths from 1855 to 1861 - no deaths for John or John Duncan Stewart/Stuart born to your couple.  Regards,  Steve   :O)

Hi Steve, you're quite right it was James not John. Didn't have actual paperwork in front of me when I posted my query. It looks like I will have to admit defeat on this one unless anyone else comes up with new info.

Hi Doddie,

With such a sizable family there is always the possibility he was a witness at a sibling's wedding, have you checked the documents in the course of your hunt? I know it's a long shot, and might be a bit expensive, but it could give you an idea of whether or not he was still living in the area.

Hi Doddie,

I found a James Stewart age 18, Servant, Ploughman, born Cullen living at Arrondont?, Rathven, Banffshire on the 1861 Census.
He's the only James Stewart/Stuart that I could see of around the correct age and born in Cullen.
A check on Genuki shows that the place may be Arradoul.

I also looked up the 1851 Census for the family at Cullen and found that Alexander's wife was Mary...would this have been a second wife maybe?

living at Arrondont?, Rathven

Almost certainly Arradoul. It's a mile or two south-west of Buckie, on the A98.
