Hello. Yes I'm having the same trouble. It's the surname- I've seen it transcribed Sarch and Sarut . I don't know what else to look for. Thanks Holden

Have you seen the Moses Search & Eliza in Panteg Monmouthshire?  I notice your Emma's father on MC is William M Search and in 1881 Moses becomes William Moses Search.  He's born Alvestone.
Problem is, he's consistently 10 years too young, but he doesn't show up until 1861.  Of course there's no Emma with him, but I thought I'd mention him in case he turns up relevant.

Hi yes I have . It's a different Moses and Eliza I think as they are my ancestors. I know Eliza was born in about 1830 and I have her marriage to William Moses Search in 1860 who gives his age as 31 and his name as Moses. I wondered if there was a connection to Emma as I can't find William Moses Search in 1851 and the one Sue found is too old to be him but I'm sure it's Emma's father. It's a mystery unless he was in the army as on his son's birth cert in 1853 Moses gives his occ. as Drummer in her Majesty's service!

Here is the 1871 census entry for them which shows that Emma had left home, that the birthplaces of the children in 1861 were incorrect and that the age of the mother is probably understated in 1851....

1871

Thornbury RG10/2585 Folio 39 Page 21

William Search Head M 52 Ag Lab Glos Thornbury
Eliza do Wife M 59 Somerset Barrow
John do Son U 20 Ag Lab Glos Olveston
Eliza do Daur U 16 Dress Maker Glos Olveston

Woodhouse Down, Olveston

DS Smiley

ps In 1881, this William Search (widower) is living next door to Charles and Emma Smart.

Hello DS
Thank you very much for looking them up. It's told me that the william M search who is Emma's father was not my ancestor though there's a probable family connection due to places of birth and unusual surname. Best wishes Holden

Hi Sue. Thank you. One of these is probably the william on the censuses. What a lot of William Search's! I thought there wouldn't be a problem with the name  My ancestor is William Moses Search born about 1829 so there may be a connection with the Moses you found. Best wishes Holden

Could this one be yours  ?

1841

Thornbury HO107/361/10 Folio 18 Page 1

Sarah Search 45 School Mistress
Moses do 13
Thomas do 10

Rudgeway, Alveston

All born in County.

I cannot (readily) see Moses or Sarah in 1851 but Thomas is living with an older sister, Hannah, who is married to William Withers
