Marriage Gwillim & Haynes
« on: Friday 28 March 08 06:18 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone could help me, I have a birth of William Gwillim b. 29November 1845, son of Thomas Gwillim and Susan (nee Haynes), born at Harpers Yard Monmouth.

I have census information that indicates that Thomas & Susan were both born in Herefordshire, Thomas at Goodrich and Susan at Dewchurch.

I just cannot find marriage certificate, Susan was born 1810 and Thomas 1810, maybe they just didn't get married.

Can anyone help me please.    I have had definite confirmation of the name Haynes, my Mother still alive at 97 and she remembers her Mother mentioning that name at some stage

I can find nothing of them in the post 1837 registers for Herefordshire or on FreeBMD for the whole country so they may well have married before 1837. If they were born in 1810 then this would seem very likley. Do you have William's birth certificate - this would firm up on the maiden name of Susan and may give you some more information of use. I think he appears in the March quarter of 1846 on the FreeBMD as follows:

Births Mar 1846  Gwillim    William    Monmouth    XXVI    87

Cheers

Hi The Snooper,

Thanks so much for this reply, I have finally got the marriage certificate, through another contact, Susan's surname was Haines in the certificate, and her signature at the bottom was Susannah Haines, so probably a little confusing, anyway the marriage was 31st January, 1843.   Found that Thomas Gwillim was a Widower when he married Susan.

So now I'm trying to find his first marriage, with much difficulty, maybe I could have some assistance there please

I did get William's birth certificate, details that you have given me.

Cheers

Hi JC,

Thanks for this, yes that is right, and we have found Susan in her Son's birth certificate 29/11/1845, as Susan Haynes (spelling)  this time, father Thomas Gwillim.

Think I have found Susan in 1841 census as living in London as a female servant aged 30 years, single, and then she married Thomas Gwillim in 1843 at Monmouth, shown as single, servant.

1861 census Susan living at Monmouth, a Widow with her son William 15 and Lucy 13.

So I need to get a death date for her husband Thomas, and his first wife's name, if anyone can help.

Thank you so much

Jan,

I would be interested to know where the marriage took place on 31st January  1843 as I cannot find it in my Hereford Index or on FreeBMD.

As to Thomas's first wife - assuming she died between 1837 (the start of civil registration and Jan 1843) there are the following possibles in Herefordshire (I have not looked at the rest of the country).

GWILLIM   ANN   16/09/1837   84   LEOMINSTER
GWILLIM   ELIZA   11/05/1838   25   HEREFORD
GWILLIM   ANN   05/07/1838   62   HEREFORD
GWILLIM   SARAH   23/02/1842   19   HEREFORD

Looking at the ages it would seem most likely to be Eliza aged 25 or Sarah aged 19.

I cannot find any marriages in Herefordshire that match Thomas with either an Eliza or Sarah since 1837 however.

Cheers

Hi again,

Thanks for this info, yes, well I should have told you before Thomas and Susan were married in Monmouth.  After Thomas died, and I still don't know the date yet, his wife Susan moved back to Hereford.

It could be possible that he married his first wife in Monmouth as well, I probably should be looking for a death of either Sarah or Eliza (the ones you mention below), I've got a feeling it could be Sarah Essex, did you come up with that name at all for his first marriage?   The Essex name rings a bell with some other information that was given to me a while back.

Cheers

Last night, I checked for sarah and her children in 1851 and they are not there.. 1841 they have 3 children. I didn't have time to look for Eliza...

At the moment I've only looked at Sarah but she is ticking all the boxes so far......

ps Jan... my David Gwillim b1806 only 2 years older than Thomas; he married an Edith Haynes(Haines) I have seen both spellings.  Did you find Thomas's parents?

Thomas could have been in Monmouth by the time he married!

I didn't realise you had the index Snooper, I shall have to see if there are any dates I'm missing Wink  I've been lucky with my Gwillims though, once I got back to David and Edith....they linked in with other well researched trees  Cheesy

Jc and The Snooper

Well I will get back to you shortly, I need to check through my information once again, but I do know that Thomas' father was William Gwillim b. 1776 approx Harewood, Hereford, don't know his wife's name.

JC you did the photo restorations for me, didn't you for Susan Gwillim, my Grandmother

Can you give me the details of 1841 census for Sarah please JC.

I've found Thomas 33 Ag Lab, Sarah 34, John 7, Sarah 5 and Mary 3.

If this Sarah died, it would be strange for Thomas to leave these children behind and mary our Susan Haines in 1843, unless some other family member took the children.

I'm really struggling with this Haines connection, I also have someone else who has Gwillim & Haynes mix in his family

thats the same one....

I only looked for the same family in 51 and couldn't find them you will need to check for deaths of the children or on a later census
