« on: Friday 28 March 08 08:29 GMT (UK) »

I have found a relation,George W Betham, travelling to the USA ,8,May,1878,and on the Castle Garden site, along with his other details, is the destination no  894,can anyone tell me where that is,so I can further my knowledge in who he was visiting maybe!

Many thanks Tsumi

I looked at the record on ancestry and it didn't have any number in destination. Oddly enough, it said England, but it did for many of them, so I think it was written down wrong. Do you know if he returned? I couldn't find anything on census records, but I did find a death record for a George Betham, born about the right time, in England, died 1930 in York, Ontario, Canada. It gives his birthdate July 13, 1853. Would this be your guy?

Hi

He did return to Britain and is on the British 1901 census and married 1886 in Westmorland, but I don,t know where he died only about 1930-1932,and yes it looks to be the same guy you have gotten details on.

Great. let me give you the details of the certificate (they show the actual certificate online, how exciting):

County of York, township of Cast(?) York, 22 King Edward Ave (he died at home), birthplace England, married, 76 years old, retired, at place of residence for 4 years, in province for 45 years, don't know parents' names, the name of informant is George (either H or W) Betham, step-son [sic] I think it says, he lived at 64 Barrington Ave. George died April 15, 1930, cause of death gangrene and absess of leg (senile gangrene) and contributory cause was arterial sclerosis (senile). there was an autopsy on the 16th and he was buried on the 17th in St. John's Cemetery. the undertaker was McDougal Brown.

No, no name and I checked briefly on the Canadian census, but didn't find anything. Why don't you post on the Canadian boards now. Someone over there should be able to help.

Good luck.
