My grandfather was Samuel James Rabone born 1879 Birmingham.
He was the son of John and Elizabeth Rabone, and I can find him on the 1881 and 1891 census's in B.Ham with his parents.

My cousin says she was told by Samuels daughter (her mother) that he became a trainee
priest, but when his father John died in 1906 he had to leave the priesthood.

I cannot trace him in 1901 (it doesn't make it any easier that the name was often mis-spelt). Can anyone please advise if he was in the Priesthood at the time would he have shown on the Census - and would he be listed under his own name or Father Ted or whatever !!
He actually married his first wife (not my grandmother) in 1902 so to me it doesn't quite tie up, but my aunt also told me a couple of years ago that her father had to leave the priesthood.

My cousin also remembers visiting a convent when she was small child (probably around 1951) and it was Samuels sister who was the Mother Superior there (I am trying to find out which of Samuels sisters it could have been.
Seeing as my other grandparents were publicans I find this amazing, and would love to be able to throw more light on it.

Can anyone offer me any help or advise please ?

You could try contacting the St.Chad's Cathedral Archive & ask them where he may have trained or if they have lists of priests that were training c.1900.

He may have ben in Ireland.
You may also ask about his sister.

Many thanks for your help..I have been away on a Narrowboat holiday, only recently discovered my gt. grandfather was a lock keeper i.e Samuel Rabone's father, so it must be in the genes !!

Thanks for thoses links... New Oscott is definitely a possibility as it was around that area
that the family lived in the 1900's.

There was also a Seminary at "The Abbey" St Thomas and St Edmunds on Sutton New Rd, Erdington, and a Convent just up the road called St Agnes Convent - the priests were in the 1900 Benedictines, now they are Redemptorists, the Nuns were Dominicans wore long black clothes (bit like Sound of Music Nuns) I went to the school there.
