WARDLE - Howden area - Help please!
« on: Friday 28 March 08 21:28 GMT (UK) »

Hi All,

One of my ancestors lived in Gilberdyke, near Howden East Yorks, and was unfortunately killed in an industrial accident at some creosote works in Staddlethorpe (which I think is near Gilberdyke).

His death occurred in 1907, when he was 'struck by a telegraph pole which was being lowered into a cylinder compound'.

I was wondering whether anyone could help me find out or point me in the right direction as to find out whether this incident was reported in any local newspapers?

Many thanks!

You're welcome Clarrie Lou...if you don't have any luck there...you might try emailing this site for info about the industry in Straddlethorpe....I would have thought there would have been an inquest so there must be something in the newspapers held at either of these sites.

Hi ClarrieLou

I'm sitting about 1/2 mile from where the pole yard was.
Staddlethorpe and Gilberdyke are only separated by the railway line.

I have a book 'Gilberdyke a village story' which has a section about the pole yard and mentions that 2 men (George Hunter and Clifford Norton) were killed when a stack of poles became dislodged.

ps. I've sent you a pm
