Hi All,
Any one know about the Riddle family around Ware 1860?
Elizabeth(13) was living with my lot as a boarder in the 1871 census Mary Riddle was a witness at the wedding of James Bateman (ggfather) and Elizabeth Westwood (after death of Abel Rogers- 1st husband)
I wonder if the Riddle family were relations or just friends?
Cheers
Keith

Hi Keith
not sure of relationship but Elizabeth seems to be living with Sarah Adams in1861 right next door to the Newtons who I think also feature in your family

Hi sandie,
Thanks for that - wounder whats going on in 1861???
Elizabeth Riddle is down as a "vistor" she is living with an unmarried mother Sarah Adams who is receiving Parish Relieve. Who gets Relieve - just the poor - or would if she gets money for looking after anyones baby?
Both Elizabeth & Mary are known to my lot - but can not find Mary in any census after 1851 (Mary in 1869 witness) to make them together
Cheers

There is a birth for an Elizabeth Riddle in Ware in 1858 Jan qtr..3a 174 perhaps if the pension stretches you might find answer there.
looks like could be a marriage in 1877 which is why I cant find her in 1881, but its not an uncommon name even in Ware ...............
what dates do you have for Mary?

Hi sandie,
Thanks looking out for me.
I have Mary Ann Riddle's birth in 13/9/1839 and her census in 41 & 51 - as a witness in 69 then nothing.
I also have a Bateman living with a Riddle in 91 -1901 and witness to her marriage in 1905? - so our family are friendly - but is that all?
Cheers

Hi,
Thanks for the note - will now see where Elizabeth Adams and Riddles come in to my lot.
I have 1 of the Batemans living with Adams and another who had a Adams/Riddle down in the Presence of another when my lot married!!!
All 3 Batemans-Adams-Riddle families seem to get on well with each other!!
Cheers

Hi Keith
I saw your post and hope you don’t mind me hi-jacking this thread - would you by any chance have a Baron Moore Riddle in your tree? I believe he was born in Chesterfield in Cambridgeshire in c1874. In 1902 he was a domestic gardener for a family in Granchester in Cambridge.
Many thanks
Lyndsey

Hi Lyndsey,

Any other Riddles??

Hi,
Thanks for the help.
The 1861 census is RG9/805 8 page 11
This shows just 2 people in this part - Sarah & Elizabeth. "Visitor" can mean anything -
Cheers

Hi Keith
No that’s the only Riddle. One of my Nan’s cousin’s was in service when she had an illegitimate son who she gave the name’s Baron Moore. On the census record there was a Baron Moore Riddle who was in service to the same family as a gardener. We strongly suspect that he was the father!
