Help in finding records of my 2x Great Grandmother Esther HEDGES born 1795 Stewkley. Esther is daughter of William HEDGES BP 1767 Stewkley. son of John HEDGES and Esther GRIFFIN. Esther HEDGES married Joseph ROGERS 20.11.1818 Mentmore. Wondering if anyone had access to Stewkley Records? I would like to know Esther's mother and if Esther had any siblings if possible. regards, Margaret.

Hi Tazzie, Thank you for the Esther Christenings at Stewkley. I know it isn't Robert Hedges and Catherine (Cheshire), I go along with Thomas and Elizabeth. My Esther and Joseph ROGERS first son born is my Great Grandfather Thomas Hedges ROGERS and first daughter born is Elizabeth Salome ROGERS. (named after Esther Parents? ) I have been given the info that Esther was daughter of William HEDGES. William is a son of John Hedges and Esther Griffin and Robert and Thomas are also sons of the above John and Esther. Have you got access to the Stewkley Parish Records? When did Thomas and Elizabeth marry? ( I am sure it would be Elizabeth FOSTER). Couldn't find this info from IGI records. Once again thank you for looking this up for me. These HEDGES are worse than the ROGERS to research if that is possible - large families and same Christian Names. Regards, Margaret.

Hi Margaret.....
Visited the library today.....
Thomas Hedges bach otp to Elizabeth Foster spin otp were married by banns by William Wodley curate of the parish of Stewkley. 16 Nov 1791. Both signed in their own hand. Witnessed by Joseph Adams & Edward Foster.
If Edward is a brother I saw this and thought I would add.
23 Nov 1797 Edward Foster to Ann Bedford of the parish of Thornborough.
I have today discovered Griffin in my family with Ann Griffin who marries Caleb Hall in 1845......they are in hubbies tree.

Hi Tazzie, Many thanks for the marriage info for Thomas Hedges and Elizabeth Foster which I will add to my Tree. I will also keep in mind Edward Foster's info. Thomas Hedges's mother- Esther Griffin was daughter of Robert Griffin and Elizabeth Tomes who married on 8.2.1754 at Stewkley. I haven't delved into this family as yet. Regards, Margaret.

Good afternoon...My Name is;Albert Robert Hedges...Known as Bob...My family have roots in Stewkley, through Brothers or Sisters of my Grandfather Robert, who died in Thessaloniki..N. Greece..October 1917. He was a sapper in the Royal Engineers...
His eldest daughter, my Auntie Kathleen Rosa Hedges, spoke much about Stewkley, which I visited on several occasions during the mid eighties and early nineties. Auntie K was always interested in the names located in the graveyard of the beautiful village Church.
My father Albert Cyril, it is said, should have inherited a farm their through an advert in the News of The World...Wills and Inheritance column, sometime during the 1930's. Apparently he was about three weeks too late!
My Grandfather had two daughters and four sons, sadly all gone however, there were never any references to relations of my Grandfather...nobody it would seem new anything, which to me seems like a cover up...
Since this is my first foray into the world of generics, can you give me some advice on initiating a search myself, since your site appear very interesting? Robert [Bob] Hedges

Hi Bob .....
Welcome to Rootschat.
It is not as hard as you may think and in a short time you can get back further.
Starting with placing the family in the 1901 census. Was Kathleen b 1900 in St Pancras reg district?
If so go onton the London board on site here and request a look up for...
Kathleen Rosa Hedges b @1900 St Pancras fathers name Robert.
I haven't got census access at the moment so I am sure some one will find them. That will give dates & places of birth and we can then go back via census ever 10 years and trace them into Stewkley. There are a couple of large families of Hedges in Stewkley and we can then pinpoint the ones we need. Give the London one a whirl and see what happens .

Hi ......
Once you get back into Stewkley you will be in my area as I can look at parish records for the village. My names in the village are Fookes/Foulkes various spelling and they marry into ...Tofield/ Hedges/Griffin/Bull I also have the 1851 census on disc and so would be able to check that for you.
What year was your Robert born in ?
Any births @ 1880 will show on the 1881 census which is free here..
www.familysearch.org
Thats a good starting point. Stewkley isn't very well covered by IGI a few pop up but not many of interest. For births /deaths/marriages another good one is
wwww.freebmd.org.uk
Stewkley would be covered by Winslow registration district.
Any pointers let me know if I can help more.
Tazzie

Good morning Tazzie,
Sorry for the delay in answering your last mail...unfortunately, we have had some virulent bugs down here in Cornwall, which have laid my wife and myself up for some considerable time.
As for my Grandfather Robert. Information from the war graves commission would indicate 1874 as his birth year give or take one year either side.
Bob
