Blood Kin

The following has also been posted to another (external) forum.
I have been overhauling my family tree and have found a number of people who are not related to me except by marriage. The resulting relationships confuse me. For example, when my great aunt married, her children became my '1st cousins once removed' and their children are my 2nd cousins. However, according to Family Tree Maker, her husband is not my great uncle but is only related by being the 'husband of my great aunt' and his father is not related to me at all. Having said that, his father is the grandfather of my '1st cousins once removed' and great grandfather of my 2nd cousins. He is essentially a relative of a relative - or should I say he is a blood relative of persons who are blood relatives of mine - but different blood! Could someone please explain to me (in very simple terms) what the hell it all means?

Family Tree maker is quite correct, you have to share a common ancestor to be related by blood, your great aunt's husband is only related to you by marriage, therefore his ancestors are no relation to you whatsoever.
His children by your great aunt, and their descendants are blood relations to you because you and your great aunt share a common ancestor.
Hope this has made it clearer for you.

Just to confuse you. If you go back to before the middle of the 19th century, before the science was properly understood by the church and general public, marriage was regarded as creating a blood relationship.
For example no distinction was made between your siblings and your spouses siblings once you were married. Thus your spouse's siblings' partners would still be referred to as though they were your siblings.
