1851 census - SNOOK in Fovant or SM COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 29 March 08 11:39 GMT (UK) »

Hello
Can I please request a lookup for family of Henry b c 1801 and Sarah b c 1806 Snook with Phoebe, Henry, Mary and William.  They lived in Sutton Manderville and then Fovant so probably in either of these places.  There were lots of Snooks in Sutton Manderville but I am researching his wife Sarah's family so don't want the other Snook families.
Thanks, Carmel

Do you have these people on any other census.

Do you have birth years and birth places for the children - are they likey to be at home in 1851

Birth places for parents.

The information given isn't easy to search with as surname could easily be mistranscribed

Thanks for offer of help Tricia Smiley
I have the family at Fovant in 1841 with Phebe 14, Henry 8, Mary 3 and William 11 months.
I have found christenings for the first 2 and 2 others who died shortly after birth at Sutton Mandeville and then christening for Mary in 1838 in Fovant.  I haven't found christening for William but birth regn is Sep Qtr Wilton district so probably Fovant.  Mother Sarah was born 1806 in Fovant and is possibly a widow in Melksham in 1861. Henry was born abt 1801 possibly Sutton Mandeville.
I think that is all I know of them.

Thanks Beth
I had a date of 11 Feb for marriage at Fovant but this was probably banns only with marriage 2 weeks later.  Do you have anything on 1851 census?  I have determined they were not in Fovant during that census.  I have also determined there were more Henry Snooks in the Fovant area as another Henry born c 1824 in Tisbury married a niece of Sarah's in 1860.

Hi Carmel,

The Online Parish Clerk has many of Fovant's records and you can look at them easily:

Try this to see the resources available.

If Sarah is the lady who is a widow on the 1861 then surely she is the same person that CatOne found in 1851. The same children appear on both census. This is the only Sarah Snook born 1806 Fovant on the 1851

I would suggest that the 1851 is your family and the unmar for her status is a mistake - deliberate or otherwise.

I will post the 1851 again and the 1861 and a bit of additional information and you can decide

1851

Dean, Fonthill Gifford Wiltshire

John Perret Head Married 54 Shoe maker born Fonthill Bishop Wilts
Sarah Snook servant 45 U Housekeeper born Fovant Wiltshire
Mary Snook visitor 14 born Fovant Wiltshire
Emmalina Snook visitor 4 born East Knoyle Wiltshire
John Perret Snook visitor 10 months born Fonthill Gifford Wiltshire

HO107/1849 Folio 358 Page 22

Now, I read the above as follows. Husband Henry has died sometime after William was born and Sarah has hit hard times so takes a job as housekeeper to John Perret - 2 children are placed in the workhouse .As often happens in these circumstances she becomes a little bit more than housekeeper and depending exactly when Henry dies she has Emmalina and definetly John with Mr Perret.

On the 1861 which follows there appears a son called Albert who is then 17.

In 1851 we have

residing in Tisbury Workhouse

Albert Snook age 8 Pauper born Sutton Mandeville
William Snook age 10 Pauper born Sutton Mandeville

HO107/ 1849 Folio 178 Page 36.

In 1861 we have

1861

Melksham

Sarah Snook Head Widow Lodging House Keeper born Fovant Wilts
Mary dau Unmar 21 born Fovant Wilts
Albert son 17 Factory boy born Fovant Wilts
Emmelina dau 14 born Tisbury Wilts
John son 10 born Fonthill Gifford Wilts

RG9/ 1294 Folio 36 Page 9.

I haven't found William Snook born 1841 in 1861 as yet but feel he is around somewhere.

See what you think,

Thanks for your help Tricia.  I was a bit unconvinced about this at first with different children appearing in 1851 and 1861 from what I already knew but when you stated Sarah was the only one born Fovant c 1806 I knew I had to follow it through.  I have found Emmeline and John christened same day so assuming they are both John Perrett's children.  However I have not found a death for him so don't know whether he died before 1861 or simply moved on.  1851 also lists him as being married and Sarah as housekeeper so maybe he had a wife somewhere else.  There are several Henry Snook deaths that could be Sarah's husband and one is Jul-Sep 1842.  I can't find any birth or christening record for Albert but he was apparently born Fovant around 1842 so maybe that occurred around the time of Henry's death and recording was overlooked. There is also a possible death of William in Wilton district 1855 so he may not turn up in 1861. Sarah was sister of my direct ancestor so I think with 1861 census I have found her death in Melksham 1864 and done enough on her line and will put the rest of it into too hard basket.
Best Wishes, Carmel

Beth
I forgot to include thanks to you in last message.  I have used those records from Fovant parish for 3 years now and was only thinking the other day how lucky I am on that branch as there are still only about 3 parishes in Wiltshire with records online. I'd like to see the 1861 census added but can't be greedy when I already have so much that others don't have.
Best Wishes,
