Hi all,
I have a marriage of Henry Jones to Celia Boxal at St Thomas, Portsmouth, on 31st October 1841.
However, in the 1841 census both their ages are given as 15 ( rounded down ?) and in the 1851 census as 25 and 26; which made them 15 and 16 when they were married.
If anyone has access to the parish marriage records, can you find out if their ages were recorded.
Thanks,
Maurice

Can't help with the parish register lookup, but Henry's age in 1861 is 43. The age in 1851 is obscured by a thick black line so although transcribed as 25, it could quite easily be 33/5. Celia's age is 37 in 1861 (transcribed as Ellin) so she probably would have been 16/17 on her marriage...
Regards Cat
ps. which Henry do you have in 1841 because I found this one -

Hi Cat,
Thanks for this, the Henry you found looks a better choice, he was certainly a musician and then Teacher of Music in later census records.
Another question, his age in 1861 is 43 so, if the age in 1851 is mistranscribed and should be 33/35, his occupation in both the 1851 and 1861 census looks like 'Musician Greenwich Pensioner'.
A pensioner at 33? Anyone any ideas as to what this means.
Thanks, Maurice

I believe it means he served in the forces and then left and was receiving some sort of pension from them. Records for Greenwich Pensioners are held at the National Archives. If you google "greenwich pensioners" it should explain more

Hi Nell,
Interesting, as I thought I had found Celia in 1841 living with a William and Sarah both aged 60. ( HO 107 / 415 / book 3 / 18 / p 30 ). Could be grandparents perhaps, or remarried.
Regards, Maurice

Yes, I noticed that and was puzzled.
I've investigated futher - Celia Ad(e)line Boxall was buried in 1836 so we can rule that one out. But I can't trace another Celia Boxall baptism in the Portsmouth area.
