Horace Alf Ratcliffe PEARCE [b 1903] married in 1924 - his father is on his marriage as a "Marine Store Dealer" which is a kind of junk dealer in Bedford??

His name was William Alfred PEARCE but I cant see him in 1901

Hi Cathy,

Definition from this 'old occupations' site: http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/m.html

Marine Store Dealer ~ Proprietor of a store selling equipment to Mariners. There were also those who aspired to that but who were nothing but junk dealers

and these two: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/OLD-ENGLISH/2004-02/1075934002

Do you have Horace's birth cert showing his mother's name, that might help to find William in 1901 if they were married then, and where in Bedfordshire was Horace married?

Thanks, that is where I got the idea of junk dealer [a kind of ''rag & bone man'']   Grin

I dont have the birth cert and I guess I wont be any the wiser without it   Embarrassed Embarrassed

Wm PEARCE isnt listed in any trade directories but according to the marriage cert 1924 - Horace was living in St Paul's, Bedford at the time and was a labourer...but that doesnt mean his father was or even that they were Bedford people
 Huh

Hi Cathy,

Here's Horace's birth registration:
Mar 1903  Bedford  3b 310  PEARCE  Horace Alfred

So he was at least born in the Bedford district, and the cert should give both parents' names and their address, which would hopefully help find them in 1901 census

The only marriage showing in Bedfordshire for a William Pearce is:
Mar 1899  Luton  3b 552    William Charles  Pearce   and on the same page are   Emily  King and Annie  Whitelock

It must be Annie Whitelock and a second marriage, as William & Annie are living with her Whitelock children in Luton RG13/1514  Folio  62  Page  27.  William is 34 and a Fruiterer - but you said he was William Alfred so probably not him, one of those cases where you really will need the birth cert, I think

I think you are right, Barbara...

I'll have to get the birth cert of Horace Alfred Ratcliffe PEARCE to get back any further.

His dad, Wm Alfred PEARCE is not in 1901 census

Thank you
