Information on Grandmother WRIGHT
« on: Saturday 29 March 08 16:38 GMT (UK) »

Could anyone help find a record of the death of Florence or Flora Wright (born 1895) and died about 1926-1928 in Elkesley, Notts, please.  She was married to Richard and had 3 children.

Thanks

Lynne

Thanks Tati, that looks very hopeful.  Where did you find that?

I now want to look for her siblings (Thorpe - about 14 of them!)  Where is the best place to start?

20th century BMD between ca. 1915 and 1984 aren't indexed therefore they are a bit of a pain to search - you have to check every quarter of every year for each event.

The complete BMD index can be viewed at several sites, none free though  Sad

Hi Linnet sorry, Lynne Smiley
Is your Flora Thorpe the one born Mar Qtr 1895, St Ives Register District, Vol 3b Page 293?

One way to find possible siblings is by using FreeBMD www.freebmd.org.uk :

In Search, select Births.  Put Thorpe in surname box, no first name.  Select years say 1880 - 1910.  Select "St Ives" in the top drop-down box on the right hand side.

This brings up Flora and another 13 possible Thorpes who could be her siblings.  If you play around with dates you may find more; some may be from another family or families.

I couldn't see another Flora or any Florence born 1894-1896, so I hope I've understood your post.

Kind regards

Thanks Gaie

I had used Free BMD for individual searches, but not for groups.  The five eldest children were born at Blyth in Notts, which is close to Elkesley.  The next seven were born at Bury in Hunts.  I have just checked the map and it is only a few miles north of St Ives, so they seem to be correct.  The two youngest were Mabel 1902 and Ella 1906 and they don't appear, so perhaps they had moved by then.

Lynne

(Just did a quick check before I posted this and have found both names in Southwell, so perhaps they were heading back to Elkesley and stopped on the way!)  Interestingly, there are some other Thorpes in Southwell with the same names as my Mum and her sister, so perhaps they were family.

Hi Lynne
And there was me thinking I'd got it wrong with St Ives in Cornwall being so far away from Elkesley Grin Grin Grin

My Fells family from the Elkesley and Babworth area.

The group search works well with relatively uncommon names - good luck if you've got Smiths and Joneses to search for, though Roll Eyes

Kind regards
