Hi, unfortunately the OPC for St Dennis is not available at present and I am trying to clarify a name. Shadrach Grigg was born 1860 in St Dennis according to his census returns.(reg St Austell March qtr). I believe that in later life he changed his name and went by the name of Richard and possibly later Joseph. In the 1891 census he was in Walthamstow with wife Nellie and gives name as Shadrach R Grigg. Would anybody have access to St Dennis baptism records for 1860. ( I have only got upto 1840). This is the only time he used an initial. I would appreciate any help, I live near Plymouth and manage a visit to Truro Record Office a couple of times a year, but am unable to go for a week or so, and I could move on with my research alot quicker with some help. Fingers crossed! Thank you, Ronnie

Thanks Hepburn, I had already looked there... it is specifically St Dennis baptisms I was after, and from OPC page , the lady in question is not available at this moment. I have been contacted by another member however, who may be able to put me in touch with somebody with knowledge of the family. As you say, Cornwall has the best online info there is, and I have yet to find anywhere as good. The OPC sites in particular are so helpful.
Thanks Ronnie

Hi Ronnie,
Shadrack appears to have been a few years old at the time of baptism and no middle name is listed.
Shadrack GRIGG was baptised 20 Mar 1865 St Dennis Parents Abraham and Fanny.
I see Shadrack appears in census as son of Abraham and Fanny so there was probably a bulk baptism done on that day. Sorry St Dennis is not a parish I can be particularly helpful with, but I see no other Shadrack listed...........Kris

Hi again Ronnie,
I have been having a good lookabout and the only possible baptism I can I can spot for Abraham is
Abraham GRIGG baptised 17 Nov 1822 St Dennis parents Richard and Jane
If this is him I wondered if it may explain his use of the name Richard
Alas I have had no luck at all with a Richard and Jane. I have gone back to 1810 St Columb Major to find a Richard/Jane combo and I am only seeing one birth to them in 1812.
There is an Abraham in St Dennis in 1841 with the family of Robert and Jane. They have numerous children but alas only the later ones are covered by the IGI apart from submitted entries ( including suggesting Abraham was born to this couple - probably only taken from 1841 census which does not list relationships) An IGI submitted entry re Jane can be confirmed in St Columb Major. (Robert does say he was born in St Col in census)
Jane GRIGG baptised 6 Mar 1818 St Columb Major parents Robert and Jane father farmer of Gavrigon in this parish
Robert GRIGG = Jane GRIGG 30 Mar 1816 St Dennis
I think you will need to get a look at the St Dennis register to be sure the entry for Abraham does say father Richard. If it does, I think you should compare the residence and occupation of the father with baptisms for children born to Robert and Jane to be sure an error hasn't been made with the fathers name in the register - particularly those children born either side of Abraham. (Elizabeth about 1820 and Richard about 1825). Another suggestion is Abrahams marriage certificate will list his fathers name and occupation. Hard to say with 1841 not listing a relationship.
Good Luck.............Kris
I note in 1881 a newly wed Shadrach is living next door to Abraham and Fanny in St Dennis (Wife Ann OSBORNE or Ann Maria RICHARDS - Mar 1881 St Columb 5c 151) Ann was from St Enoder - Banns were not read there

Not really coming up with much else. I noted Althea also spotted the 81 census while I was working on this earlier. Yes does look like a second marriage doesn't it Althea. I wondered when I saw it since Ronnie mentioned the wife Nellie. "Nellie" is only 24 in 1891 - no children, so doubt it is the same person. She (or they both do) lists as b St Austell in 1891. I see this marriage. - a possiblility perhaps Shadrach/Frederick maybe Frederick GRIGG = Nellie HORE St Austell Sep 1/4 1890 5c 185
I see what you mean Ronnie - come 1901 Nellies husband is now Joseph GRIGG aged 39 b Cornwall (Children Nellie, Fred and Alice M so no clues there)

The marriage I found is Ann OSBORNE to Shedrick GRIGG Mar 1881 Qtr St Columb
In 1891 census there are GRIGG children with an Osborne family Grandparents..so could be apossibility, then where are Mum and Dad 30,Retyn Cott.,1,Joseph Osborne,Head,M,49,,Ag. Lab,Employed,St Stephens Cornwall,, ,,,Sena Osborne,Wife,M,,50,,,St Dennis Cornwall,, ,,,Eva Grigg,Grndau,S,,8,Scholar,,St Enoder Cornwall,, ,,,Joseph Grigg,Grnson,S,4,,,,St Dennis Cornwall,, ,,,Emma Grigg,Grndau,S,,1,,,St Enoder Cornwall,, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kayhin/1820a.html
Are any of these names with the other person in 1901
Kris can you see baptisms for any of these children to confirm who parents are???

Hi Althea,
Very interesting find Did he leave children with inlaws and disappear with new wife to Essex?
Edith GRIGG 10 Dec 1882 St Enoder Parents Shadrich and Celia (father Farm Lab of Trewinnion)
Emma Jane GRIGG 25 Aug 1889 (born Jul 22) St Enoder parents Shadrack and Cecelia Ann (father Lab of St Enoder)
So Emma looks good but we have a birth listed for Eva and a baptism for Edith and the mother is Celia/Cecelia Ann
Will see if there is a burial listed St En

MMM No sign of a burial and I do not see a likely one listed on FreeBMD - She had to be alive on 22 July 1889
I dont know what to think here Celelia Ann was young....must have been barely 16 at marriage yet lists as 19
Cecilia Ann OSBORNE b Jun 1/4 1865 St Col 5c 130
"Sannia" aged 6 in 1871 at Trewinion

Strange one Do you have 1901 census that you could see where the children are?
The Sannia in 1871 is obviously this same person we are chasing how does Cecilia Ann become Sannia, but then Mother same name becomes Sannia in 1881 So at least you can see the imbedded ANN

I've asked Julia the OPC for St Austell if she has any marriages or banns, love to see if he is a widow or not

Ohhh Ohhhh We have a story here if I could only read it.
Banns were sort of published St Enoder between James Roberts Bachelor and Annie Grigg ..................... I am going to keep trying to work it out. There are only 2 dates, 18 and 25 Mar 1894.
There is something written on the bottom of it. It is so small.....Magnifying glass time....Here's Hoping I can at least work some of it out - bet it is good
