I don't think so Althea. I suspect bigamy here. Although I can't get all the words, I get the impression she claimed he was dead ( that he died in a mine) but they found out otherwise and that is why the marriage did not take place.........Kris

Oh Right. So not the right marriage.......So we still need a Shadrack/Joseph = Nellie Marriage to fit the Essex couple between 1888 and 1891.
Starting to look like neither of them actually remarried, therefore there was no bigamy
Dying to hear how much Ronnie knows.....Kris

My goodness! you have all been so busy whilst Ive been ofline. I suspect that Shadrach later became Richard then possibly Joseph. I am investigating the Frederick Charles line. I have the 3 birth certs for Nellie, Fred and Alice. Nellie was born at Hatherley Road Walthamstow 8/6/1892 to Richard Grigg general lab and Nellie formerly BROWN. This address isl just round the corner from Hoe Street North where Shadrach and Nellie were in 1891 (at most .23 mile ref Multimap). Then Fred was bornat Chingford Road 29/4/1895. Parents again Richard general lab and Ellen formerly Brown. Alice was born at Forest Road 19/12/1900 but dad was Joseph general lab and mum Nellie formerly Brown. Then as stated we have Joseph and Nellie in 1901 at Brunner Road. All very close to each other. When Fred married Edith White in 1922 he named his dad as Joseph Grigg, mechanical engineer, and was living at Francis Road Leyton. I believe that this is all the same person and that Shadrach had run off to London with Nellie Brown, which is why I was trying to see if Shadrach was baptised Shadrach Richard.(1891 is only time he uses R as middle initial.) I think it is the most likely scenario. I am amazed just how busy you have all been and I need to sit and read all your messages properly. Moving backwards from Shadrach via Abraham and Fanny is quite straight forward but I always like to get as much confirmation as possible before "claiming" a line. Thanks so much to you all very much appreciated and you can imagine what a grip this one has on me. Cheers Ronnie

Right , have had a good read. Its interesting to see all the Ann Osborne info. I hadn't looked at her in depth other than to trawl through BMD page by page for a death and there wasn't one. Not surprising when I read what you have found out about her .
My next step was to trawl through for a marriage but as you say, possibly they never married, although often couples married later in life when it got close to pensionable dates. My g.grandparents were together from early age but didnt get married until in their 50s. So I will keep going.
I will have to get down to Truro asap I think to have a good look. Thanks again everyone.
Ronnie

Kris, ref Abraham Grigg in your earlier message: I have the earlier St Dennis baptisms on cd and they list a baptism of Abraham 28/8/1831 son of Isaac and Elizabeth - he was a labourer. There is also a baptism of Isaac 30/8/1799 to Abraham and Jane. Somebody has submitted a marriage on IGI between Abraham and Jane Solomon 1781 which could tie up with Isaac and Elizabeth having Honor Solomon aged 78 living with them 1841 census, but as somone already mentioned, these submitted entries need verification. With regards the Richard name, Shadrach's mum was Fanny nee Richards, so that might fit there. I need also to look into her family for any clues.I have been concentrating all my efforts at the Walthamstow end until now. Thanks also Althea, interesting stuff re the Osborne side. You can understand her trying to get on with her life if Shadrach has cleared off. I will keep going !! bye Ronnie

Hi Ronnie,
Sorry, you are quite right there. I don't know how I picked the wrong Abraham. 1822 one is married to Amelia not Fanny. Lucky you were onto it. and saves the problem of who his parents were as I feel there is a problem there. I wondered when you said his gen was pretty straight forward as I had seen a problem (Parents listed as Richard and Jane - yet he is with Robert and Jane.) Don't know what I was doing yesterday - the one I was looking at was 10 years too old. Mothers maiden name certainly makes sense - alas the baptism does not list a middle name. We do often find middle names tending to surface years later. I certainly cannot see another Shadrack so feel as you do that this is him. Interesting that he later called himself Joseph when he had a son named Joseph he had left in Cornwall
As to the marriage of Abraham in 1881. I can confirm that Abraham GRIGG = Jane SOLOMAN 6 May 1781 St Dennis.
I wondered when I found Cecelia alive and well yesterday if you were aware of it. I was expecting to find a death but when I couldn't find one I kept hunting. It was lucky actually that we had found the wrong marriage in St Austell for Frederick and Nellie - otherwise I wouldn't have consentrated so much on a death between 22 Jul 1889 (birth of Last Child and 1890 - the what I thought was a second marriage. When there was no death or burial listed I looked a lot harder to find Cecelia Ann alive. Very fortunate I have St Enoder PRs on microfiche which allowed me to find the find the baptisms, giving me the name Cecelia rather than Ann. Without those or I never would have spotted her
Cheers Kris

I Have Abraham Grigg and Jane SOlomon in my tree if you get back to that line, but haven't followed the branches all down
His father William marries Grace Varcoe and that connects with my Varcoe tree
Jean Ashfield has many of these Griggs on her pages http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jean.ajin/genealogy/pages/varcoe.htm

Hi Ronny,
For my money its Cecelia.
The marriage lists her just Ann, 1881 census lists as just Ann but apart from that she is some form of Cecelia. (even things like Sannia where we can see the Ann may have come from.) You would need to view the cert to be sure of course but this girl never varies with having been born St Enoder.
Yes I see there are Ann's about of the right age - A few of them Ann and an Ann Jane but although they were born in St Col district - they were not born in St Enoder. Joseph and Cecelia did not have a daughter Ann. These children are with their grandparents so I really think it is same lass. She is Ann in 1881 yes but if it is not the same person, there is no Cecelia or variant about anywhere. We also have the Banns being disbanded, and then there is Cecelia's status listing as mar in 1891 and widowed in 1894, so I really do think she was married to Shadrack. Have fun at the records office..............Kris

thanks Kris, I see what you mean, so I will have a really good look next week.
They could never have imagined that this would be puzzled over so long after the event.
Bye Ronnie
