I am interested in Sutty Row Colliery which was in the Birtley/Gunnerton area of Northumberland. I have checked on one of the Mining Sites and I think it closed in the 70's and has now been landscaped so that here is no trace of it. I would be interested to know if anyone has any old photos of it or knows of a web site where there might be some. I have done a search but haven't found anything. My great grandparents lived in Sutty Row which my mother has said were just a few wooden houses. She used to visit them in the late 1940's/early 1950s. Thank you
Sutty Row Colliery closed in 1973. If you go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a search on the co-ordinates 390500, 577524 it will centre the map on the site of the colliery, you can then look at the earlier historic maps of the area. It is such a small mine I doubt if you will find any photographs. It does not appear to have employed more than 18 people, and only 9 when it closed. Stan

Thanks once again Stan. I didn't know it was such a small colliery. My great grandfather would have worked there as he lived in the Pit Cottages. I suppose if there are any records they would be at Woodhorn perhaps? Andrea
