Finningley Baptism Mystery Completed with thanks
« on: Saturday 29 March 08 21:14 GMT (UK) »

I aquired these records as a bonus from a search sometime ago. On checking them I cannot find a birth or death for Henry. He doesn't appear with the family in census' of 1891 or 1901. John and Ann were married in 1883, but I checked for a birth in her maiden name (Hempstock) just in case. Still no joy. Would it be possible to double check this entry to make sure it is correct?

Baptisms at Finningley – Father; John William Rose, Mother; Ann Louisa - father’s occupation – Labourer.
Henry, 17th September 1885
Harriet Annie, 16th September 1886
Sam Henry, born 11th February 1889, baptised 10th March 1889
Dora, born 18th May 1891, baptised 14th June 1891

Hi

Just an observation.  Son b 1889 was given Henry as a second name which is quite often an indication that a previous child of that name had died.

Although his death may not have been transcribed on the partial index (freebmd) have you checked the full GRO index

There are no Rose burials on the Notts FHS transcription for Finningley ...and I can only confirm that those baptism details are as recorded on their baptism transcription.

I do wonder if it's an error in transcription ....if some Henry was attributed to the wrong parents (unless your data came from another source?). If you email Notts Archives at the address shown on their website, with the date of baptism, they may be able to confirm or deny it for you. They are usually pretty good.

Hi Heather,

My data came from a member on here. I can only presume that it was from the same source as the one you have. I did wonder if it was a mistake.
Carole's observation concerning the other son with the name Henry, also crossed my mind.
I'll get in touch with Notts Archives and see what they come up with.

Many Thanks

I have received information today from Notts Archives confirming that the baptism record is correct. Although I don't have a birth or death record at the moment, at least I know Henry was a part of the family.

Thanks for all the help and advise
