Wow you folks are so helpful  Grin
Peter
Congratlulations, this is Jane Austen territory. All my forebears only had the Poorhouse to fall back on.

This is new country for me too, I have the usual ag labs and a lot of Iron moulders in NBL/DUR

Mim
A Mrs Grace Charleton, a Miss Mary Charleton and a George Charleton, merchant of Gateshead named in the will of Eleanor Marley, spinster of Gateshead, 24 April 1787. (Listed in Personal names in Wills proved at Durham 1787 - 1791 NDFHS)

Your info looks spot on  Grin

This is what I know - or am pretty sure of - about Cornelius Charlton

Born c1722 (MI transcription from St Mary, Gateshead) - no entry on the IGI.
Married Grace Harrison 12th Nov1763 Gateshead (IGI entry)
Died 25th Jan 1771 (MI transcription)
Children
Mary born c1764 died 1845 (MI) - died a spinster
Elizabeth born c1765
Ruth born 1766-1840 (my 3x g/grandmother)
Grace born c1768 burial 1770 (Gateshead PRs)
William Harrison born c1771 burial 1784 (MI)
and
Grace, this is the interesting one, see my original post) baptised about June 1773 (IGI), Burial Sept 1773 (Gateshead PRs)
I wonder if she was born after Cornelius had died and was only actually baptised when she got very sick.

I see that George Charlton has an entry on documentsonline which I will send for. With a bit of luck he is Cornelius' brother.
Administration letter of George Charleton, Merchant and Bachelor of All Saints Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. Proved in the Court of Durham.
Date May 06 1799

But why can't I find Cornelius' will?
Oh this glorious frustration  Grin !!!!

Hi,

I've just noticed another entry in the publication I mentioned previously (Personal Names in Wills........NDHFS). It concerns the will of Isabella Pearson, a single woman of The Close Newcastle. The following names are mentioned in her will of 21 March 1783.......

'godson William Harrison Charlton and his sister, goddaughter Mary Charlton, both of Gateshead, minors, and their mother Mrs Grace Charlton; Mrs Mariana Charlton, Mile End, London, widow.'

George Charlton of Gateshead Corn merchant was eldest son and heir of Thomas Charlton of Cocklaw then of Bromley died Feb 16 1734/5 gentleman and his wife Elizabeth Harbottle married St John Lee 27 Jan 1717.
Bromley now Broomley would be Corbridge parish perhaps the baptisms of George and Cornelius would be there, if they were brothers.

Stupid of me, you already have Cornelius's baptism in Gateshead which makes it less likely they were brothers. Thomas Charlton of Bromley would have a will no doubt.

That's them! William Harrison Charlton died age 13 in 1784. Godchildren..yes that makes sense. i wonder if Mariana Charlton was Grace's sister-in-law?

Peter
I only have Cornelius birthdate as an estimate from his Memorial Inscription so that suggestion is a good possiblity and worth following up

The Admon I downloaded for George last night gives very little
6th May 1799 above £100 below£300
George Charlton late of the Chapelry of All Saints... etc, Merchant.....
Administrator, William Charlton ...of Newcastle only (this has been added later with a ^) brother and one of the next of kin of the deceased.

possibly means only "surviving" brother..says she hopefully.

Thanks for sticking with me. I'll see if I can find a will for Thomas.

Hi folks
Just an addition to this board, I wrote to Durham Achives and Special Collections to see if they could find a will for Cornelius Charlton

(Oh and by the way familyhistoryonline was out by 10 years on his death/MI....so check, check and doublecheck peeps  :-)

This is what they replied.....
Thank you for your e-mail of 22 April enquiring about a will for
Cornelius Charlton. I have now checked the indexes to the Durham Probate
Records for five years following the date of death you gave in 1781 but
unfortunately there was no mention of anyone of that name.
I am sorry to give you a disappointing reply.
Regards,
T.A. Alderson

So where do I go next?
I did hear from Durham that his MI gives him as an eminent Corn Merchant, have sent for a hard copy of that, but why oh why is there no will?Huh?

Do you think it's worth trying Newcastle RO to see if they have something? Who would I write to please?
There seems to be no record of his baptism either and I'm wondering if he actually had a different first name.
oh dear  Embarrassed  any help would really be appreciated as I know he's out there somewhere
