Sears at Great Marlow?
« on: Sunday 30 March 08 08:22 BST (UK) »

Benjamin Sears m. Maria Barney at Stokenchurch on 19 Oct 1749 and they raised a family there.
But Benjamin (b. abt 1725?) was christened elsewhere.....

I have found Sears/Siers/Seers etc at Ibstone, Fingest and Pishill, but no sign of Benjamin.
Some of the Pishill familes were from Henley and Maidensgrove, but Ibstone PRs gives Gt Marlow as a place of birth...

Are there perhaps any Sears listed in the PRs there?  Undecided

Sorry - there are Sears (etc) baptisms in Great Marlow around that time, but no Benjamin.  Sad

 Thanks for looking!

It was a George Sears, b. abt 1792, that ended up living at West Wycombe, who was listed as coming from Marlow.
Was he perhaps c. there?
There is no wife with him in 1841, but he has a number of children, also from Marlow.... Maria b. 1826, David (or Daniel) b.? 1828 - ), Ellen b. 1829, George b. 1831......

I don't know where they married, or what his wife's name was. Cry

Am I missing something here?  Haven't you jumped a few years from the Benjamin whose baptism you were looking for around 1725?   Huh

I looked at the names of Benjamin & Maria/Mary's children baptised in Stokenchurch: Catherine, Galfrous (!?), Sara, Thomas & Martha - as I'm keen on naming patterns, especially this early.

I notice there's one of those IGIs submitted by a member (i.e. handle with care) which has Mary Barney as baptised in Radnage 11.4.1719 d/o Jeffrey & Sarah.

I have ancestors who regularly seemed to travel between Stokenchurch and Radnage - a matter of a couple of miles between them.

If we take 'Galfrous' as Jeffrey - I think it's likely that Benjamin's  father was Thomas and his mother either Catherine or Martha.

As for the Great Marlow Sears around that time:

1714 May 2 Elizabeth SEARS d/o Robert & Elizabeth
1716 May 3 Sarah SEERES d/o Robert & Elizabeth
1717 Jul 28 Hannah SEARES d/o Robert & Elizabeth
1719 Apr 19 George SEARS s/o Robert & Elizabeth
1721/22 Mar 8 Samuel SEERS s/o Robert & Elizabeth
1723/24 Jan 26 Mary SEARS d/o Robert & Elizabeth
1725 Nov 14 Jane SEARS d/o Robert & Elizabeth

Then there are a number of baptisms of children of George & Sarah Sears and Samuel & Margaret Sears between 1746 and 1758.

For what it's worth, there is a baptism for a George SEERS in Great Marlow 15 Sep 1793 s/o Samuel & Mary but I'm still not clear as to how that links in with Benjamin.

Thank you everybody, for the info.
I thought that the George Sears living at West Wycombe in 1841 and 51, might have been related to the Stokenchurch Sears..... which prompted me to look for Benjamin at Marlow?

The 2 couples you mention - George and Sarah and Samuel and Margaret who c. children at Marlow, both m. at West Wycombe.....

Now, back to Benjamin and his tribe.......
I did find a Jeffrey Sears, who m. at Radnage in 1812, so there is a Radnage link somewhere. If Mary Barney is my Maria, who m. Benjamin, that could explain where the family name Jeffrey comes from....

It is really the Stokenchurch Sears family that interests me.
They are a tricky bunch to sort out, as many of the men married more than once. So it is quite a challenge to try and find out who married which Thomas etc. I shall concentrate on sorting them all into "happy families" and think about Benjamin and Maria, at a later date....

Thanks again for all the help.  Grin

If it is not too long a list, would it be possible to tell me what Sears records there are at Marlow?
Shocked
Seeing that the George and Sarah and Samuel and Margaret Sears that you mention, married at West Wycombe, I would be interested to see what other links there may be?

Also you mentioned a George Sears, c. 1793, to Samuel and Mary.... that may be one of the 1841 West Wycombe Georges.....

There are rather a lot of Sears baptisms in GM - so I'd better send you a PM with the details.
