Maidenhead Berks
« on: Sunday 30 March 08 09:20 BST (UK) »

Kia Ora
Greetings from New Zealand
I am hoping I might find someone with local knowledge of Maidenhead!
I have recently found a descendant in Australia who has supplied some family letters written about 1949.  giving the address of GERTRUDE MARY JARRATT & her husband JOSEPH BANKS JARRATT as 16 College Road(?) Maidenhead .

Gertrude was born 1871 in Chelsea and Joseph 1874 in London.  Gertrude had a son Harry Brent Bainton from her first marriage. Harry married Annie Binks in Maidenhead in Sept Q 1924.  I think Joseph & Gerty also had a daughter Emily Mabel born 1900 in Fulham.

Gertrude's first cousin was my great grandmother who emigrated to New Zealand.

Could anyone help with
1. Deaths of Gertrude & Joseph between 1952 and 1971 which is about the longest I would expect them to have lived?
2. Ideas about cemeteries in which they would have been buried?
3. Any local description of the area in which they lived early 1950s.
4. Any pointers as to other sites/places to search?

I received this information about 3 hours ago and have the families back to the 1700s but am now trying to go forward!

Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks
Marlene

Hi Marlene,

College Road in Maidenhead lies north of the main road to Bath and contains a number of large houses

As far as which cemetery they might have been buried in, there are two possibles run by the council:  All Saints or Braywick.  See here for further information:

http://www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/cemeteries_index.htm

All Saints is closer to College Road.

If you have Google Earth, type in the post code SL6 6BN and you can see the approximate location of the house.  All Saints cemetery lies slightly north of west from there.

Can't help with their deaths at the moment.

Hello Marlene,

I was born just around the corner from College Road and College Avenue and my Grandparents lived almost next door to St Lukes Church about 1/2 a mile away.  I had no idea where they were were buried if not at St Lukes.

Then a case of serendipity I came across an email address for Outdoor Facilties (I can't think what I was looking for at the time but it must have had something to do with burials...) I wrote giving all the details I had and this very kind lady came back within a day giving me dates and plot numbers of 2 grandparents and an aunt!

If you PM me I'll send you the email address.
Hope you have some luck and sorry I don't recognise any names,

Regards,
Abiam

PS

I should have said they were buried at All Saints Cemetery which is not actually at the church but in the same road at the far end of a long avenue.  All Saints Avenue

Kia Ora
Abiam & Nell - acting on the advice from Nell I looked at the All Saints site  and emailed! Within 24 hours, over our  weekend,  I had a reply from the cemetery and the library with some very useful info!

All Saints cemetery sent me a photo of the grave! The library sent additional info which allowed me  to pinpoint the death of their daughter in Gloucester, but buried at All Saints.

I was absolutely thrilled and both organisations deserve a medal! Especially as Glos Crematorium wants 30 quid just to search! I wish all my rellies were in Berkshire!

Thanks  to you both for  your help - I have peered at the copy of the letter I have from 1949 and it looks like the street might be College Rise as opposed to Road!

I am very grateful to the people of Berks in more ways than one!

THANK YOU!
Marlene

Good news!

College Rise ran parallel with College Glen (where I was born and lived for the first 22 years).  The Avenue and Road were more upmarket biggish detached and College Rise houses were mostly semidetached and my road were terraced in blocks of four.

There is a little lane connecting College Road and College Avenue called Grassy Lane which used to be our 'camp'.  I remember collecting rose hips and backberries and having great fun there.  It is probably a proper road now - tarmac and pavements!

Good luck with the rest of your search,
Abiam
