Hi, for anyone who's interested... I'm writing a blog that details how I'm tracing my grandmother's family history. It's an interesting story filled with adoptions, family myths and lots of travelling between England and Australia. Well...it will be. Basically it's a diary describing the research I'm doing, how I'm doing it and what I'm feeling day-by-day as the story unfolds from the documentation. Here's the URL: http://missingevelyn.wordpress.com/ I'm hoping the story of my search will be a little like a web version of "Who do you think you are?", except a DIY version where I do all the research and don't get to travel. I'd love to have you read it. See you there.

tristiw,
You have made an excellent start; I am hooked already!
I went through a similar experience when I traced my grandmother and her family (in Canada and the U.S.).
It took a lot of time and work, and there will always be unanswered questions, but I was able to learn a lot.
Best of luck to you! Josephine

Thanks to everyone for their support. 99 hits for my blog in one day is pretty good! I'm also surprised at how good the blog writing process is for clarifying my mind and thoughts when it comes to searching for family. It really does help to write it down

tristiw,
I've just read your entry showing the adoption register for Olwyn.
If you haven't already done so, I urge you to contact the Salvation Army to see if their records have been preserved and if there is some way you can have access to anything that might be on file for Evelyn.
Their ability to release records will depend upon the records still existing and the country or state's adoption laws. You might have to provide documentation proving the link between you and her.

Josephine, all the information I have about Olwyn's adoption is from the Salvation Army in Melbourne. I have the register and day book entries, but there didn't seem to be anything else in the file. It was good though...I got an address for Evelyn and her birth details so I could find her birth certificate.
Thanks for the tip, Cheers, Tristi

Good stuff, Tristi.

My grandmother was born in a Salvation Army maternity home in the U.S. Luckily (for me), she wasn't adopted, so I was able to receive a copy of her form. I had to purchase official birth and death records to prove the relationship because normally, in the state where she was born, the Salvation Army can only release the records to the mother or the adoptee. It sounds like it was easier for you.
My great-grandmother told some fibs on the form, however, that sent me on a few wild goose chases and that took a considerable amount of work to disprove.
Regards, Josephine

I didn't actually contact the Salvation Army - my mother did. But she had Power of Attorney over my grandmother anyway because she was demented. So...I guess it was almost like releasing the information to the adoptee as far as the Salvo's were concerned. I don't know whether those laws work like that in Australia.
I'm so glad EVelyn was honest on her documents.

You're lucky in that respect, Tristi.
My father wasn't raised by his mother, so I had to start from scratch and it took a lot of time, work and money. I had a date of birth in which the year was incorrect and just nicknames for her parents. The surname she used on my father's birth certificate was that of the extended family member who raised her. Her real surname is a nightmare because of the ten million ways it was spelled, LOL.
