......but your other cousin who actually looked up the Little Staughton marriage on 13 Nov 1804 found that it says Richard Wagstaff was batchelor of Dean.

& Dean's PR has baptism on 11 Oct 1779 of Richard, son of John & Mary Wagstaffe 

They also had John 17 May 1785 & Thomas 20 Sept 1787

John Wagstaff married Mary Keech at Dean on 16 Nov 1778

You may already have that info, but just in case

No it was actually David who said he was, or could have been, born in Dean. I could have the wrong one but I think I will wait now to see what the Wagstaff Society turn up which is maybe what I should have done in the first place but its more fun to do a bit of searching yourself isnt it!!

According to the 1803 National Defence Muster Lists - John WAGSTAFF [he was Dean's Parish Clerk] is over 50 [Military Class 4] and he still has a dependant child under 10.

Son, Richard Wagstaff is also listed as Military Class 1 [i.e. unmarried under 30] but in the list it says he is a ''consumptive''  [I thought that meant he had T.B. but it could be asthma or something Huh].  Ages of the men are not recorded on the Dean list.

The thing is there were WAGSTAFFs all over North Bedfordshire and there still are I believe

There was a Richard WAGSTAFFE, ''gentleman'' aged 35 with 2 children still dependant [i.e. under 10] in the Poddington & Hinwick Muster list.

There is also a Richard WAGSTAFF, labourer in Gt Barford [Military Class 3 = ages 17 - 30 & married OR he has 2 dependant children under 10]

I was looking for a Richard WAGSTAFF/E who was of Military age in 1803 [over 17] and he is likely to be among the above.

Ps That is not all of the WAGSTAFFs so it may well be worth reserving a copy of ''The Bedfordshire Muster Lists'' published  by Bedforshire Historical Record Society [vol 71].  I dont think it is in print at the moment but please see thier website.

I think if the Richard WAGSTAFF you are seeking was either the Dean man or the Poddinton/Hinwick then it is worth emailing the local Archives re: surviving Wills

Hello Cathy and thanx for all that info.

I am going to have to check this out `properly` as you suggest to be certain which one is the right chap. `Consumptive` does mean TB  but then diagnosis was an inexact science in those days. Could have been a bad cold!! Wink Undecided

I have noticed the heavy presence of Wagstaffs in Beds which confuses the picture of course.

I forgot to put that John WAGSTAFF is listed as 'infirm' . 

This doesnt mean they were excluded from defence fighting should France have invaded!  The lists were compiled by local constables who would have known the men & TB is unlikely but I think a cold would be too...

I think Wills would be a useful way forward?  A quick email to Beds Archives should tell you if there were any WAGSTAFF Wills from Dean - but is the Poddington Richard a likely candidate too?

I was only joking about the cold, just put it down to a nurses wonky sense of humour!!! Roll Eyes Wink

I believe the Poddington candidate to be a possible but only on hearsay at the moment because of work that a cousin of mine is doing and its from where we have been told the family has been traced back to.

I have been looking at my old Bedfordshire Muster List 1539 - 1831 [pub by BHRS] and in particular the 1803 National Defence Muster which lists all men of military age [17 - 55] 'cos France was expected to invade etc

In Poddington/Hinwick is listed 35 year old Richard WAGSTAFFE who was married with 2 children under 10 [first wife?] - he is listed as a ''gentleman" for occupation

No listings for that surname [or variants] in Bletsoe or L Staughton but there is in many other villages - are there any other villages you are interested in?

We are lucky in as much as the lists for Barford, Stodden & Willey Hundreds survived whereas they sadly have not for most areas.

Hello Cathy,
All I know regarding other villages is that he was married in Little Staughton and Dean was mentioned somewhere along the line as a possible birth place.

My cousin who has done some record office research has listed Poddington as his birthplace.

Many thanks, still waiing for the info from the Wagstaff society which may tie up some loose ends.

There were lots of WAGSTAFFs [and almost as many spellings  Roll Eyes] in Bedfordshire.

If Richard was a "gent" in 1803 - there may be a Will [worth asking the Beds archivist?  But I bet there will be lots of Wills for that name so it may be better to narrow it down a bit?].

Have a look at Beds Archives online too ...search "blars adlib" and enter WAGSTAF in name - Wilden seems to be a village that turns up re WAGSTAFF often?

Oh yes, I have noticed quite a few Wagstaffs since I have been chasing my line back.

I am still muddled about which Richard is the right one but I will check out the Beds Archives online as you suggest.
