« on: Sunday 30 March 08 20:15 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help with the baptism of a George Kelsall born Fareham 1833 please. What was his full name and who were his parents.

Thankyou very much.

On the 1881 census he is down as George but I have found him. His real name is Gustavus Nicolls Kelsall bap 1835.

He was in Wonford House as a retired army captain (feeble minded) so perhaps he wasnt able to tell them his proper name or liked to be known as George.

Thanks

The couple had at least six children, all baptised in Fareham:

William  9 May 1830
Mary Eleanor 2 Mar 1832
Frances Anna 22 Feb 1834
Gustavus Nicolls 3 Sep 1835
Thomas Moultrie 1 Sep 1837
Lucretia 13 Jul 1841

I suspect that Thomas had a brother John Theophilus (a lieutenant in the Royal Navy) - he had a son baptised in 1831 in Fareham Theophilus Moultrie.

Thomas Moultrie Kelsall became a solicitor - there is a copy of his will proved 1869 at Winchester.  Thomas Forbes Kelsall's will is also there - probate dated 1872.  A Lucretia Kelsall left a will - proved 1836.

The name Moultrie was the maiden name of a Lucretia Kelsall - probably the same who died in 1836.  She had a sister Sarah Moultrie who died in 1824.

This sounds like a good family to be researching.  Smiley

Thankyou to everyone.

My interest stems from having found two rellies at Wonford House Registered Hospital for the Insane. Further research revealed that this was a private hospital - fees only £1500 per person per year. AND YES some stayed for 40/50 years. Alas for my rellies the money ran out when Dad died and in the 1901 census they are pauper patients in Bodmin Lunatic asylum.

I became so fascinated by this place which even placed adverts for people to go and stay there that I decided to look at the families of some of the inmates to see what sort of backgrounds the patients came from.

Full names were used in the 1871 and 1881 censuses and a lot can be worked out from that. It has become quite addictive.

thanks
