Pictures of Peel or Forton road Gosport, 1900 - 1920?
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 22:09 GMT (UK) »

I know this is a long shot but was wondering if there are any pictures available of Peel or Forton road in Gosport between 1900 - 1920's, or purhaps a book I can purchase on the local area history with pictures

thanks

Hi James

Follow this link:

http://calm.hants.gov.uk/DServeA/

(Catalogue for Hampshire record office)

Click "Search" on left hand side

In the top box marked "Any Text"  put Forton Road

In the box marked "Format" choose "Digital Image" from the drop down menu

And you will see a picture dating from around 1900.

PS I'll check out the name of a book series and post that when I remember it!

Britain in Old Photographs, publisher: Sutton Publishing.

There was one for Portsmouth - published 1989. ISBN: 9780862996857
Waterstones list it, but it may not be easy to get.

Another for Portsmouth & Southsea ISBN: 9780750912969
But maybe only available locally.

the Hampshire records didn't show any photo's, which I thought rather odd.. Huh, might try some different words & see if something comes up

Hi Finder !

Had a flick thro' this at Waterstone's this morning

Gosport: A Pictorial History by Ian Edelman ISBN-10: 0850338891

2 photo's of Forton Barracks, none of the road.  I couldn't remember which other road you wanted when I was there  Undecided sorry !

This seemed to have some good link too

Thanks Wendi, all info gratefully received, I was originally looking into family but now the interest has spread out into the general history of the area, adds more meaning to the search knowing what it was like back then
