1930s Belfast actor touring Canada
« on: Sunday 30 March 08 22:33 BST (UK) »

I have a bit of a problem. Is there a Canadian archive which would hold a collection of programmes of theatrical companies which toured Canade in the mid 1930s?

I'm attempting to assist finding more information about a Belfast actor. Unfortunately all that is available is his christian name ... Jock and a few postcards sent home by him. I'm waiting a reply re the address on those postcards.

Jock's messages said that he was touring Canada and the USA and the season was coming to an end in June 1935. He was then going to Hollywood to make a picture and hoped to be home in Belfast in 1936.

Hello Christopher

You could try searching various library catalogues, museums and records offices. There are 142 boxes of programs found in this lot at the National Library of Ireland.

Theatre programmes, playbills and posters from the Joseph Holloway Collection.
by Holloway, Joseph, 1861-1944, donor.
ca. 1880-1944.
Subjects Theater -- Ireland
   Theater -- Ireland -- 20th century
  Theater -- Ireland -- 19th century
Description:  142 boxes.

Theater Programs is an indexed term when searching Canadian library catalogues.

If you know what province and city the postcards were mailed from. This might aid in determing what theaters were in the area he stayed. Then contacting the theater, or local library or museum in that city might get results.

If you can give us the city, I or fellow Canadian rootschatters should be able to help identify theaters in the area.

In Ontario you might try "Theatre Ontario" head office. It is the Community theatre organization for the province. They might direct you to a theatre buff in Toronto. The "Royal Alexandra Theatre" was the oldest I remember being in in Toronto. It has a new name but there might be some historical items on Google...
Its a start??

Hi kiddo,

That's a good suggestion.

I immediately googled "Canadian theatre historian" and spotted a University of Toronto Press Journal titled "Canadian Theatre Review" www.utpjournals.com/ctr/ctr107.html

There may be magazines mentioning actors and movie stars from Belfast in the early twentieth century. The British Library www.bl.uk/collections/cinema.html has copies of

1. "The Irish Limelight":
The Only Irish Journal Devoted to Cinema and Theatrical Topics published in Dublin.
January 1917 - July 1918; Oct 1919 : Vol. 1 no. 1 - vol. 2 no. 7; vol. 3 no. 10 and are wanting March 1918.

2. "Star Weekly" published in Dublin.
1 March - 19 April 1947 : Nos. 1-8 Continued as: "Film Star Weekly" 26 April - 15 November 1947 : Nos. 9-38 Discontinued.

3. "Talkie Topics and Theatrical Review" published in Dublin
4 March 1931 - December 1932 : Vol. 1 no. 1 - vol. 3 no. 12.
