Time Wasted is Time Lost
|
I can only repeat an earlier quote that I gave on this subject from The Listeners:
"Never the least stir made the listeners, Though every word he spake Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house From the one man left awake: Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup, And the sound of iron on stone, And how the silence surged softly backward, When the plunging hoofs were gone."
. . . . still nothing has changed.

The main names that I am researching into at the moment are Cadman,(originating from Bulkington, Warwickshire), Smedley, (Leicestershire and Derbyshire), Paynes (Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and Udall - you will also find several other names on my web page. I look forward to E-Mails from anyone who would like to share or talk about our family history.

Crazy genealogist

When doing a search on Google the other day I came across information on another site that looked like mine but was written differently. In shock I tried to head to the home page to see who hosted it and lost the page. There isnt the possiblity that our web sites have been stolen by some one. I will continue to try and find the site and keep you all posted

I would hardly think that our websites have been stolen. Although, nothing is really fully copyright on the web.
However, it would have been before last Nov/December because no one has been able to access them since then

That's my understanding Gadget too, with the server down nobody will be able to access our websites except ourselves from whatever copy we have on our hard drive depending on what software packages we use to put our websites up.
What worries me is how to access what is on the server and retrieve it should it ever reappear.

I had a few hits on cached pages (on google) since the rootschat space went down. They showed up on my statcounter stats.
Clearly, ghosts are just cached images

Does that mean we can ask for our sites to be deleted from the server or do we not own the copyright??

The server isn't there anymore. Our sites are probably backed up onto tape or whatever. if you try to access your space or even apply for a webspace, you get a 'not found'.
I think sunnyboy is maybe feigning innocence

For your Information:
Obviously if the server is down, then the sixty day rule doesn't apply.
At the moment the server is offline, which means nobody has access to them through the internet. This also means they can't be stolen. As Julian said, sometimes you can still find various pages in the internet, but they are all from ISP caches
Nobody has put up a new site on the server since it went offline - because it is offline !

I've said it before, and been reprimanded for it, but I'll say it again...
You have all been remarkably patient and loyal to the Rootschat server.
However the treatment from Rootschat leaves a great deal to be desired. Promises, after promises, servers delivered and about to be put on line, and still, months later.... nothing.
I appreciate that Tristan is a volunteer, but it is unreasonable to make ongoing promises to your members, and keep letting them down. If the sites can no longer be hosted then just say so, and everyone knows where they stand.
I took the plunge some months ago, and have learned a great deal since, now have a much more comprehensive site than was possible with Rootschat, albeit that I pay £5 per year for the privilege. In the long run the absence of the Rootschat server has done me a favour. Maybe we should all see this community for its strengths, and look wider for our web site hosting.
These comments are not intended to denigrate Tristan, but he clearly does not have the time to do all he is attempting to do without further delegation.
Let's hope you all find a happy solution to the problem.
Martin

I would hope you are not reprimanded for what you have said. Much of what you say echoes my feelings. I feel very let down by the ongoing silence.

I wish to know why anyone should be reprimanded for spending 6 months patiently waiting and being ignored constantly when politely asking why and when?
Me thinks we are being taken for fools
Sorry if this offends but that is the way I feel. I could use a lot stronger language but don't want to offend in that way as well.
