Common Dumfries surnames

Dear All
I am interested in identifying the surnames that were common in Dumfriesshire in the past, with a view to identifying current residents that are more likely to be descended from 'old' Dumfriesshire familes.
Does anyone know of a census index of surname frequency by county? Or how one might ascertain this information? Or indeed any other way to figure this out....
