Hi all
Sorry this may be a bit of a long one but i really dont know where to look next and was hoping somone might have some ideas..
Its only been through researching my ancestry that i've discovered our family name isnt what we thought it was,and i am having real trouble trying to get past my earliest ancestor.
Ok what i have..
William Bilney Commonly called Whiting ( its written in the PR's exactly like that)
married in Helmingham 1796 at the time it stated him and his bride were both of this parish,although i did check and hes not there.
Then we have baptisms of his children all in the name of Bilney (although William is still stated as William Bilney commony called whiting)
Some of his children used Whiting others changed the name slightly to Bilner in later years also Biliner..
In 1841 William is in Barham Union Workhouse as William Whiting theres a Y to say he was from Suffolk,his wife was living in Helmingham
William died in Barham Workhouse and was buried in Helmingham 24 April 1849 stating his age was 82,he was also down as Wiliam Bilney commonly called Whiting on his burial PR
The Records for Barham Union Workhouse have been destroyed and i am just getting so frustated as i dont know where else to look next and i have to say i am immensly curious as to why the whole Bilney commonly called Whiting bit and i would love to get past this mystery and have been trying for so many years now..
I'm really hoping that someone on here has maybe thought of something i havent tried yet?
Any help much appreciated.

I know this is a long way back and just might be a coincidence, but found the following marriage on Boyds index.

1657 / WITING JN / BILNY JOAN/ MILDENHALL/ SUFFOLK

Do you have the christening of William Bilney Commonly called Whiting ?

I have seen names written thus in documents where the child is born before the parents married, so the child is born with the mother's maiden name.

Then the parents get around to marrying and he becomes known by the father's name.

There is a whole branch of Bridges family originating in Athelington Suffolk - we were contacted by a descendant about 25 years ago (yes, my husband and I have been at this lark for a very long time) Roll Eyes

It turned out that the original John Bridges of this family was the first child born to Mr Hawes, mother's maiden name was Bridges.
After the birth of John the parents married and all the other children born to this couple were baptised Hawes - but first child was always known as Bridges.

As I say, just a thought

Bridges in Derby
FULKER in Berkshire then Hammersmith/Barnes LND
Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Wilson, Sale in MDX/LND
Gt-Grandfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham LND - arrived Boston USA 1889 - what happened next?

AH HA
Nope hadnt thought of that one,as yet i havent been able to find a baptism for WIlliam (which is the frustrating part as i just dont know where he came from)
Me thinks its definatly worth checking out.
Espec with the WHiting Bilney thing

Another reason why this one caught my attention, Bilney is a name I often see when looking through PRs for Framlingham.

I have to look up something for my husband so will check to see if any mention of your William too Grin
