I wonder if someone can help me find the marriage of Robert Barkas and Catherine Hamilton, (whose son Robert was born in 1861 in Littletown) This would give me their ages and birthplaces, they are my great great grandparents.
Perhaps mother and son (9yrs old by then) might appear on 1871 census? Which may or may not give me any other clues. Father was deceased by the time the son was born.

Interesting possible here ...given the surnames involved. Sorry, but I found the image quite hard to read. Please pm me if you'd like to see it.

And possible for Catherine. There is a marriage for Catherine Barkas Jun 1870 Durham 10a499. One of the male names is Robert Raper.
1871 RG10 4958 167 54 Quebec Cottages Esh Durham Robt Raper head 26 cartman Carlton Yorks Cath Raper wife 27 Caybeck Yorks Margt B Raper dau 7 Little Town Peter B Raper son 5 Little Town William Raper son 5 months Esh
Given the fact that she is Yorkshire born (as is Ann Hamilton in the last posting) and has children born in Littletown I think this is a real possible.

Here is the marriage of Catherine Barkas to Robert Raper in the district of Durham in the County of Co. Durham. June quarter 1870. Vol 10a Page 499
and this is the 1871 for Catherine, I would agree with Heather regarding Robert being with his grandfather. Interestingly in 1871 the Barkas children are listed as Raper but back to Barkas in 1881
