Maybe it was a training school for sons of soldiers who had lost their father?

Have you son John in 1871
I have a possibility in the army

The Royal military Asylem in Chelsea was a school for Orphans of soldiers in the regular army (1803)

Just google Royal Military Asylum Chelsea - lots of results

Thanks for the info I will have a look at the website

The son John I have in 1881 in the 4th hussars but nothing for him in 1871.

If that home was for orphans I cant understand why they would be in there, as their mother was still alive, perhaps she couldnt cope, the father died in 1868

Thanks for your help
Bless your heart

Might be a long shot, but have found
1871
Royal Horse Infirmary and Military camp Huts and Remount Establishment
Charlton
London
John Barber 19 Gunner Royal Artillery
b. E Dereham Norfolk
RG10 775 102 24

by the way -the home was for orphans in 1803 - probably over the years it was open to other children of the military
