GGG-Grandpa George Robert Ovenden 1791-1860
Naomi Howse, bc 1855, Woodstock

I am looking for any info on this lady or her family.

She married? or lived with George Clare Ovenden and had by him:

George Charles Ovenden, 1881 - 1883, reg St Pancras
Alice Mary Ovenden, 1884 - , reg Kentish Town
Annie Georgina Ovenden, 1886 - , reg Kentish Town
George Ovenden, 1888 - , reg Kentish Town.

Naomi's husband, George, died in 1888 and her children went to pauper schools whilst she went to be a housekeeper.  Eventually the family was reunited.

In 1871, I think she is living in Park St, Woodstock, boarding (along with 10 other girls) with Harriett A Muirhead, who is described as "Matron Industrial School". 

Her name looks more like "Howel" on the image, but I think it's probably her!

Hi Rambler,

Yes, I have seen that but it's good to get some backup, thank you.  Poor girl, her own children ended up in a pauper school, although she did get them back.

I still haven't found a marriage between her and George, but maybe they didn't bother.  I would love to know how they met, though, and what happened to the children after 1901.

She's still there in 1871, still transcribed Howell, but image looks like Howse.

Thanks, everyone.  I do have most of that.  I was hoping to contact a relation of the Howses - it seems Naomi must have been orphaned when she was young so I can't get further back than that.

sorry manchester rambler i did'nt realise that you had already posted naomis birth details

you say that you can get no further back than naomi
you have the birth index
if you order her birth cert you should find out her mother and fathers name and her fathers occ.
you could then check the censuses for any likely candidates

Found the following in the parish transcripts for Wootton, Oxfordshire, a small village just north of Woodstock.

Baptism 9.12.1855 Howse Naomi d James & Mary, shoemaker, Old Woodstock

Marriage 15.11.1842 Howse James 20 bach shoe-maker of Old Woodstock 
                                  s Benjamin, lab
                                  Edwards Mary fa sp gloveress of Old Woodstock, father
                                  deceased
                                  Wit. Edward Saltmarsh  Mary Saltmarsh
( by t Nucella Rector of Glympton)

Although there are other Howse baptisms at Wooton, Naomi is the only one for that couple.

Checked Woodstock transcripts but no other baptisms for James and Mary.
However Woodstock burials show

11.7.1860 Howse Mary aged 40
27.11.1860 Howse James infant

Can't find a baptism or burial for James in Wooton or Woodstock. I'll keep trawling.
