GRIFFITHS
« on: Saturday 05 April 08 18:05 BST (UK) » |

Between 1814 and 1817 three children were baptised at Oxford Street Independent Chapel Bilston to Joseph and Mary,Marianne and Mary Ann, in one entry Joseph is shown as Rev. Later on the marriage certificate of one son father is shown as Joseph Griffiths, occupation Minister. I am interested if anyone has any information about the Rev. Joseph Griffiths.
I know that a Rev Joseph Griffiths and an Ann baptised a daughter Mary, with the baptism being carried out by Joseph. at Broad Eye Wesleyan Chapel Stafford in 1823 but am unable to find a definite connection between this Joseph and the one in Bilston especially as the first baptisms were in an Independent and the latter in a Wesleyan Chapel. The above Rev Joseph Griffiths together with daughter Mary appears as a Retired Wesleyan Minister in the 1851 census in Aston Warwickshire. However I am unable to find them in 1841
Any information gratefully received Tony

Hello,
I think there is a reference to him on the following site: www.library.manchester.ac.uk/specialcollections/collections/methodist/using/indexofministers
If you don't want to type all that, google methodist ministers and you will find it. Once in the site, go to the last menu entry on the left of the screen, headed Methodist Archives Biographical Index, and then go to the relevant name,
The Wesleyan Chapel you mention is pictured on www.Staffspasttrack.org - put Wesleyan Chapel Stafford into the search box - The first photo is the 1811 chapel where your baptisms took place. This was replaced on the same site in 1863 by the building with the tower. THis tower is all that is left now and is part of the Market buildings. The church was demolished in 1984 and the Methodist and URC churches formed a partnership, eventually building a new church on the site of the old Presbyterian church.
Hope this helps.

Hello again
I think this is the family you found in 1851
1841 HO107/1150/1 folio 10 page 22 ED2 Round Hill Aston Birmingham Warwickshire
Joseph Griffeths 55 Ind Maria Griffiths 40 Richard 20 Mary 15 Ellen 2 Joseph 5months
Only the last two were born in Warks. I assume that Ind means independent means.
Is this the correct family though?

Hi Handm The family you found in 1841 is the same as the one in 1851 as they were then still living in Round Hill Aston. The Rev Joseph Griffiths joined the Wesleyan connexion as an itinerant preacher in 1809 his daughter Mary's mother Ann died in 1834 in Wrexham following the death of another daughter Ann.
I now suspect the two are different as no mention of him having another wife is given in the biographical notes and if he was a Wesleyan Minister why did he not have the three children baptised at Oxford Street Independent Chapel baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel in Bilston Again thanks for your help Regards Tony
