Hello, I am looking for my G.G. Grandfather: George William Augustus Sharpe born in Cape Town South Africa around 1856, father's name Thomas Sharpe.
Does anyone know how, with the limited details I have, how I would go about getting hold of a birth certificate?
thanks, Lin

Hi Lin,
I have no idea how much information you require to obtain a birth certificate from South Africa but this link has prices and form to download, takes months, I understand, for it to arrive.

Perhaps you could contact them and ask how successful you are likely to be with very limited details?

Hi Lin,
Unfortunately there is no chance of obtaining a birth cert. for such an early date. Below are approximate dates when registration started in the various provinces.
Provinces Births Marriages Deaths Cape 1895 1700 1895 KwaZulu Natal 1868 1845 1888 Transvaal 1901 1870 1901 Orange Free State 1903 1848 1903

Sorry, somehow I hit the post button before I was finished!
Your best option would be church records. Do you perhaps know your g.g.grandfather's religion? Did he die in SA? If so, there might be a Death Notice either for him or his father in the Archives. Although a DN would not give his exact DOB, it will give the age at which he died as well as names of children, spouse, where he died, etc.
These are some possibilities taken from the National Archives Index, assuming that Thomas died in the Cape.
MOK 1/2/331 1346 SHARP, THOMAS J. DECEASED ESTATE PAPERS. 1882 MOOC 6/9/185 3611 SHARP, THOMAS J. DEATH NOTICE. 1882 MHG 0 19720 SHARP, THOMAS. 1912 MHG 0 12193 SHARP, THOMAS. 1908
CO 3922 35 MEMORIALS RECEIVED. THOMAS SHARPE. REQUEST TO REMAIN IN THE COLONY. 1822 MOOC 6/9/197 6861 SHARPE, THOMAS. DEATH NOTICE. 1883
Let me know if any of this seems probable and I will try to help.
Regards,
Yvonne
