Bishop Knight Bruce
« on: Thursday 29 May 08 12:32 BST (UK) »

I am looking for two shipping lists, from reading some information it seems I am unlikely to find them, however having just found some information I thought was unfindable - by simply asking the question  Roll Eyes  I thought I might ask this one as well.

George Wyndham Hamilton Knight-Bruce was consecrated third bishop of Bloemfontein in St. Mary's Church, Whitechapel on 25 March 1886. Shortly thereafter I believe he left England, with his wife, child and my great grandmother as servant/nursemaid. Her name was Jane Gluyas nee Reed. Jane's husband had gone to Australia to prepare for her to join him some time later. I have a picture of the child taken by T or F Armstrong Photographers, Maitland Street Bloemfontein, Orange Free State. This is in an Album that was given to jane by the Bishop and his wife.

Any ideas as to where to look for the details of the trip to SA would be much appreciated. It would seem Jane arrived in Australia in 1887 or early 1888. (She had her first child October 1888). I haven't been able to find a record of her arrival, but this may yet happen. Would I find any records of departures from SA? Which area/port should I be checking, my geographic knowledge of the area is virtually nil.

Ricky just sent me a fabulous link to this

...  He left England on July 23rd, 1886, with Mrs. Knight-Bruce and his little son, accompanied also by the Rev. W. E. Jackson, and after landing at Capetown made his way to the Diocese, arriving at Kimberley on August 21st.

So now I just need to find a link to g grandma!  Smiley
