Hi, Everyone, Have recently managed to track the movements of the JOHNSON family of Cambridge, who ran several retail businesses in the city between at least 1800 and the 1920's... One of the brothers, Richard JOHNSON, who ran a grocery business at 29, Market Hill, like his other brothers seems to have done well enough to retire in comparative comfort. In the 1871 Census he is living at/in Fairmile, Henley, ref: RG10 1426 14. Does anyone with local knowledge know what kind of street or road this may have been then, and indeed whether this part of Henley exists today? Many thanks, keith

The Fairmile does indeed exist today. It's a long, straight hill leading out of Henley towards Oxford.
I would imagine it's little changed at the town end, where there are some very pleasant old houses in terraces. Further out its now a wide main road, with open grass verges. I don't know what that part used to be like.
You can see it here:

Anne, All very interesting, thanks very much for that! I'd better have a closer look at the Census pages to see whether I can pinpoint more exactly where Richard JOHNSON lived on Fair Mile, keith

The Fairmile is indeed a fair mile from the outskirts of Henley to the foot of Bix Hill. The road was tree-lined with wide grass verges until the 1960s when the council decided to fell the trees in the interests of road safety. I have seen at least one idyllic picture of sheep being driven along the grass verge towards the town. Sadly, they wouldn't last five minutes today!

Hi, Rreadings, And welcome to Rootschat! Thanks very much for that on-the-spot description of Fair Mile past and present. I'm just wondering now what was the reason or family connection for Richard JOHNSON deciding to move from Cambridge (with the picturesque river Cam) to Henley (with the picturesque river Thames) in his retirement... keith

Hi Keith There is a modern day photo of Fair Mile, on this website, but its taken from the town end of the road, didnt look to see if there was anymore, put Henley in the search box, then tick the Henley for Oxfordshire, and its on page 7

Well, now, Ricky, It would be the most extraordinary coincidence if Richard moved into a house with almost the same name in Henley as his brother William's in Fulbourn, Cambs. It's certainly described as being near/on the edge of Fairmile. I'd better have another look at that Census entry, though there seemed to be no house names or numbers on it. Remarkable... keith

Hi Keith
looking at paperwork on the website the house was built about 1810, so anything is possible .

And a very handsome house it is too, Ricky. A bit out of my budget, though... keith

Must have missed him the first time I looked, but have now found Richard JOHNSON in the 1881 Census of Henley. Here, his address is given more precisely as 5, Oxford Villa, Fair Mile. So, can I ask whether these Villas exist today; they were numbered up to 8, then Mountfield Villas began... keith
