Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place.
I have a relative whose children went to Wokingham District School in 1881 Solomon Lovejoy Mary Ann Lovejoy George W. Lovejoy Frederick Lovejoy
They are described as inmates, I was wondering why the children were called inmates?
Their father was blind from birth and he had three illegitimate children with my relative Mary Coventry who he lists as his housekeeper in 1861. They later married and had 7 more children so the children had a bit of an unconventional upbringing I suppose. Their father died in 1877 but I can find no record of their mother Mary Lovejoy nee Coventry born c. 1835 Hurley, Berkshire.
Thanks for any help.

shome mishtake shirley - its 'The Reading & Wokingham Di strict School Haha Yes it is. I am having a blonde moment. I will alter the title now very ashamed.
This was how is was written District The Reading and Wokinghamistrict School
Any idea why they would be referred to as inmates rather than pupils. Seems a little harsh.

I don't think he was but that was very interesting, thank you. He was blind from birth according to one census so I can't imagine he would have made much of a sailor although he did work as a labourer. They could well have been orphans but I can find no trace of their mother alive or dead.

Agree with YP - hadnt seen that link, but the fact that its an Institution with its own Enumeration District puts it in the same league ast the Poor Union stuff like Workhouses ...

Ah, thank you, that makes sense as to why they were referred to as inmates.
Thank you everyone for your help.

Olive is shown as Clive - and Kate is with her in a Freeman household.
if you put 'Visitor' in the relevant box, and 'Wargrave' in the Keyword box, and just surname it will tease them out

Hi
In the Berks Burial index there is a burial in Wargrave
1872 30th Sept of Mary Lovejoy aged 36 'died in the hospital'
there is also
1877 Joseph Lovejoy aged 47 from Wokingham Union House
Debbie
Thank you so much, that is fantastic...not that they died so young but you know what I mean.

Sorry to be so cheeky but can anyone find any trace of Solomon Lovejoy after 1881? I can't find him anywhere and he has quite a distinctive name so you would think it would be easy. Thank you.
