Enville Hall, Staffordshire
« on: Friday 14 January 05 14:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi l wonder if someone could possibly help me?, l`m looking for information on a Rev Ambrose Salisbury who may have some connection to Enville hall sometime in the early 1600`s. Ambrose was rector at Whepstead, Suffolk from the 1640`s through to his death in 1678, he was married to Frances and on her memorial in St Petronella`s church in Whepstead, Suffolk it reads
as follows

" Here lyeth ye body of M(rs) Frances Sal?sbury widdow lat(sic) wife of M(r) Ambrose Grey E of (?) Envid Hall in Staffordshire who dyed 25 March 1700 aged 93 years"

I have contacted Staffordshire record office and they say the only thing it tie`s in with is Enville Hall, the seat of the Grey family the dukes of Stamford but they checked Burkes and the name Ambrose Salisbury is not mentioned?.

If anyone can help me on this or suggest somewhere else to try l would be most grateful.

Kind Regards

Robert Salisbury

Robert, I am attaching (if it works!) an extract from Kellys Directory for Staffordshire 1872.

Under the entry it mentions a memorial to Thomas Grey of Enveld in the Church. Don't know if this will be of any help.

Hi Jean

Thanks so much for the attachment, l think this person must have been connected to the Earls of Stamford, Envid Hall now called Enville Hall is the ancestral home of the Stamfords, Frances who married the Rev Ambrose salisbury is the cousin of Lady Jane Grey who was queen of England for l think 19 days before having her head chopped off Huh...........sorry l`m going on a bit.

Once again your help is very much appreciated.

Kind Regards
