Hiya Annie
Well, on the 1920 US census...in Quincy Ward 4,  Norfolk, MA

HARLING
John, Head, b ~ 1885, age 35, England, to USA 1888. nat. papers pending, teamster, granite wagon.
Margaret, wife, b ~1875,  45,England, as were her parents. To USA 1888, alien
Margaret S., daughter, b 1911, Massachusetts
Edith, daughter, b 1912, Massachusetts
John A, son, b 1914, Massachusetts
John, FATHER, b 1833, England, as were his parents, no occupation, widower,
to USA in 1888, alien.

and they did indeed arrive in Boston on 12 May, 1888 on board the ship "England."
John, age 50, labourer, destination Boston
Mary (or Marg) S, age 40
Sarah, she was 10 or 12
and John age 4.
(tricky for my old eyes to read)

soooo, hopefully, we can find them on 1881 UK census

A VC recipient can be a general laborer..... should be awarded big $$$ if you ask me.

Hugs

John Sr's wife Margaret died of pneumonia 23 March 1904 at 9 Kidder Street in Quincy.  Her maiden name was Harmon and her DC states she was born Ireland.  The informant (hubbie) did not know her parents names.....but she was buried at Mt. Wollaston Cemetery in Quincy on the 26th.

I'd hazard a guess you'll find John lying in close proximity to Margarets final resting place.

In case it's of interest...their son John married in Braintree, Jane R. Matthews on 2 June 1909.  Daughter Sarah Ellen married Harry Thomas Osborne, a teamster, on 10 Feb 1894 in Quincy.  She states her father is John J. Harling and mother is Margaret Harmon.

Best wishes

No not mine.....but the vital records are viewable at the NEHGS website (with a sub) through 1910 and we just got lucky that Margaret had the good sense to die before then!

Mt Wollaston Cemetery is a lovely place.  My daughter used to live a few miles south of it and I recall driving past it when visiting her.  I wonder if the Quincy Historical Society might be of any assistance in determining if John is indeed buried there... http://www.quincyhistory.org/PAGES/library.html  They say they'll respond to email.....

Also here is a blurb about the cemetery... http://ci.quincy.ma.us/CemAboutPage55.html

If the Historical folks are of no assistance then perhaps the city could advise you of the burial plot and who was residing in it.

Best wishes

You've got him Grub !!  Cheesy

I can't find him on any others though !!  Undecided a possible on 1841 ..... !!

IF he was in the Charge of the Light Brigade .... he would be in the army and the Crimean War in the 50's and maybe 60's .... then I believe the regiment went to Ireland which is where he probably met Margaret !!

He went to America in 1888 .... and we have him after that ... with no mention of the war until his notice of death in the paper .... if I can find his grave ... it may say something on that !!

 - here's some info on the Richard Harling in the 4th Light Dragoons.

- born about 1826 in Kendall, brother James in New Padford Nottinghamshire, name also given as 'Harding'.

Place is probably RADFORD, there is a James there in 1861 with his family and a brother John, aged 26, born Kindal (Kendal)... red herring or not?

Thanks Jorose ... I had seen that .... but as he was the only Harling on the list ... I wondered if it might be him !! Undecided

I have come across so many old soldiers who came to America ( mostly for the Civil War ) and said they were part of the Light Brigade ... even said it on their headstones but I can't find them listed ........ unless they changed their names !!

Lawrence Crider has another Harling ... I just found him ...... !! but not ours I don't think !! Undecided

Harling, Pte Joseph, (1881), 4th LD Bn in Craven [56-4-24]. Enl 02-03-55 [56-4-24]. Prior Occ: Butcher [56-4-24]. Joined Regt 09-01-55 [55-3-5]. ...

and Craven is in Yorkshire  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Not sure where to go with this notation, Annie

http://broncgeeks.billings.k12.mt.us/complang/tih/TODAY.JAN

Search for Harling, using Edit/Search feature

Says John was the last survivor??
